Free for Gold

For all the 360 users still on here, you may or may not have noticed, but Xbox Live has been and will continue to give away 2 games a month until the end of the year if you have a gold membership.

Right now the game for free is Assassins Creed 2.

The schedule is on the 1st and 16th of the month a new game will be available to free download.

I saw this, and immediately thought to myself "Dammit, what game did I miss on the 1st?" Also not entirely sure why X-Box didn't communicate this special to me via e-mail, since they love to communicate every other special they do (especially asking why I'm not taking advantage of their Rewards program where I can get 100 MS points if I can invent time travel and stop myself from buying anything on the Marketplace until I get that e-mail so it qualifies as a first time purchase). It's Assassin's Creed 2: great game, but a lot of us already beat it and traded it in years ago. They've got my attention, and hopefully they go with something a bit more current next time (doesn't have to be a year back, but, again AC2? That's like five years ago).

Fable III last month, and an arcade title called Defense Grid on the 1st.

Glad I could help... and for the three of us worldwide who have not played any of the AC games its a nice little surprise.

Defense grid is a nice little time waster if you like tower defense games.

Today's free game is Crackdown. I have never heard of it and the description was not very descriptive. Any ideas if it is worth the 6gb?

The game for the 1st to the 15th of August? Crackdown. The game that you probably already bought used and took back four or five years ago to play the exclusive Halo 4 (was it Halo 4?) demo that came with it. A game you could also probably go into any Gamestop and talk the manager into giving you for free (it's $3 used online).

Look, it's nice that they're trying to do stuff similar to PSN+ and all, but Crackdown? Really? They couldn't have given up the extra $16 to go for Crackdown 2 at least?

Edited to add: Since OOMike and I posted at the same time, I'll answer your question. Not really, no. It was unique when it came out. Now the graphics are dated and the gameplay is very "meh". People only bought this in bulk for a demo, and then immediately traded it in for something better. I would say don't bother, unless you want to go for some achievements before deleting the game entirely, though good luck sitting through it.

Yeah, I mean... I won't be one to complain about a free game, because they really don't have to give us anything. But PS+ blows this out of the damn water. Just in the past month or two, PS+ has offered up Saints Row 3, XCOM, Deus Ex, Uncharted 3, etc.

And to give you an idea of its age, the beta included with Crackdown was for Halo 3.

Holy ever loving shit is that game crap. Its like GTA, but with worse controls worse graphics (unless you are looking at GTA2) and this time you are a cop. I played it for about five minutes, then deleted it.

They've already announced what will be free starting on the 16th of this month: both Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Case Zero. I'm not a fan of this series, but I'm temped to try this out just because it'll be free.

See, now those are better games. I kinda liked the first Dead Rising, but it felt like a "first game released for the system" type of game. Dead Rising 2 was a hell of a lot better, with the crafting system and all. And that they're including the prequel for free, too, is even better, because it's a good sample of what you get in the sequel.

I have Dead Rising and I liked the openness of the game and all the unique ways you can fight the zombies... That I can look forward to.

I know it's still about 11 days off, but I can't stress enough that you should play Case Zero first. It gives you a taste of how much better it is than the original and gets you invested in the story a bit, too. Not to mention that it's length (really short) does make you want to fight to get the best rating (and the best ending).

This month's offerings are Magic the Gathering 2012 and Rainbow Six Vegas. In other words, after last month's Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2 Case Zero offerings, they're right back to not putting forth any real effort (Magic 2012 is outdated by Magic 2013, which I would assume will be outdated by Magic 2014 sooner rather than later, while R6 Vegas was a release about the same time as Crackdown...only a bit more playable and with a multiplayer that was fun back then, but is now severely outdated).

The free game for the first half of October is Might & Magic Clash of Heroes. Apparently, this is actually a well-reviewed Arcade game and is only 2 years old. It also looks like it has a very specific target demographic, since it is a Puzzle/RPG game (the puzzle part coming in the form of the combat, where you engage in some sort of "match up colors" type of game, I dunno). It's a step up from Rainbow 6 Vegas and Crackdown, for sure, but it doesn't look like it's for me.

The second half of November is giving out some Tower Defense game I've never heard of. The first half game was Kingdom for Keflings. Those are all well and good, but they're actually doing everyone a solid with the first December free game: Gears of War. It's a game I just never got into, mainly because my brother bought it, then beat it, and immediately traded it in before I got a shot. At the price of free, it's worth a shot for sure.

Extremely worth the price of free.

I used to hate FPS. Gears, thanks to it's over the shoulder third-person approach, is the game that eased me into the FPS genre. Great game, memorable characters. It'll probably feel a bit dated now, though, but I'm excited for all the people who've never got to play it.

I'm excited for the first half of January. The free game is Sleeping Dogs, which I have considered picking up since it was first released, but just never got around to. The reviews for the game are pretty good, and people I've talked to seem to like it, too. Definitely worth a look at the price of free.

Oh wow... that's actually a really good game (and one that isn't old as hell, for a change). It's mostly plays like a GTA clone, and I liked it a lot. It's definitely worth getting if you've never played it.

This month's are Dead Island and Toy Soldiers.

I thought Dead Island fucking sucked, but it's free, so I guess it's worth downloading and trying out for yourself if you haven't played it. I don't know anything about Toy Soldiers, though... maybe I'll have to give that one a shot when it's free come the 16th.

If Toy Solders is what I think it is, they already did it last year in the free for gold...

I am at work so I can't be sure, but I am thinking it is a WWI tower defense type game.

ETA: Okay I just looked it up and it is the same game, which I am almost positive I would not have bought... or am I just getting old and not remembering?

Toy Soldiers is a tower defense game. It's actually a lot of fun for that genre, but it's still tower defense and that's not for everybody. Awesome, awesome value for free, though.

Haven't turned on my 360 in a while, but since I'm playing Stick of Truth right now, saw what the game is this half of the month. Civilization Revolution is the free game for now, and, if you are a strategy buff, this is a fun waste of time. Played it for a while back when it first came out, and it was entertaining, but I also felt like I needed to trade it in sooner rather than later to get a better trade-in value. Now that it's free, I'd definitely say pick it up.
