Hall of Fame 2016

Wasn't sure if this was rumor crap, retro crap, or other crap...
Anyway...on the 9.99work I saw an old Legends of Wrestling, and on it, after Gene or Good Ol' JR says he knows Michael Hayes will be a Hall of Famer one day, Hayes replies, "If it didn't happen in Atlanta, it ain't gonna happen" (or something close)...got me thinking...next Mania is in Dallas...to me it'd make more sense for it to happen there than even on Bad Street, Atlanta, GA

Absolutely agreed, I think it makes sense to induct Hayes and the Freebirds in Dallas. Also, I think the HOF headliner for 2016 will either be Sting or Undertaker.

Next year will be Mean Mark. They'll make Sting wait at least another year. Then NippleH will induct him.

The Freebirds should be a slam dunk for next year's class with a possible all-timer of an induction speech by Hayes.

I can easily see a scenario of Taker FIRST being announced as an inductee and then calling his shot and saying that this is his last match and he wants to pick his opponent. Personally, I have no interest at all in a Sting-Taker match, but a lot of people do so I can see them going with that one.

Taker should go in next year, but I know the WWE is itching to get the Rock in there in order to soak up all that mainstream pub, so that's another possibility in terms of a "headliner."

Can Demolition go in the same time the Freebirds go in? What about the Von Erich Family?

The Von Erichs are already in. This begs the question: Hayes inducted the Von Erichs, but who would induct the Freebirds? Kevin Von Erich has said he has back problems that tend to keep him from traveling, and he would have quite a long trip ahead of him, coming from Hawaii, and all. Maybe Jimmy Garvin? Regardless of who inducts the Birds, I would love to hear Michael Hayes's acceptance speech. Too bad neither Terry Gordy nor Buddy Roberts is around to see it happen, whenever the Freebirds go in.
As far as Demolition is concerned, if the Freebirds go in, then I think Demolition should be held back until another time when they would be the main faction going in.

By the way, didn't Bill Eadie have heat with Vince? If so, it could be a while before Demolition gets in.

Demolition deserves to get in for their accomplishments and for the fact that I could listen to their theme song 100 times a day and never get tired of it.

As for the Freebirds, why couldn't Stone Cold induct them? It doesn't have to always be a contemporary that inducts someone. Sometimes, it could be a fan like Stone Cold, who has stated on many occasions how big of a mark he was for the Freebirds and the memories he has of going to the Sportatorium and watching them in college and how that contributed to him getting into the business.

Plus, Hayes was the one interviewing when he coined "Austin 3:16." Oh, and a Wrestlemania in Dallas is going to need a huge Stone Cold presence so that would be my pick to put the Birds in.

Rick Rude is also overdue for an induction. He wrestled for WCCW in the 80's if you want another Dallas connection.

That would be a pretty impressive class:

The Undertaker
Fabulous Freebirds
Demolition
Rick Rude
Lou Thesz (posthumous)
Cyndi Lauper (celebrity)

I like that. They generally have 6-8 inductess (if you count tag teams and factions as 1) and they did 9 last year (counting Connor), but I'll do 8, since I'm not worried about who gets the Warrior award if they even do one next year.

The Undertaker
JBL - inducted by Ron Simmons
Fabulous Freebirds - inducted by Steve Austin
Demolition - inducted by The Ascension (j/k)
Stan Hansen
Rick Rude (posthumous) - inducted by Paul Heyman or Bobby Heenan!
Lou Thesz (posthumous)
Cyndi Lauper (celebrity) - inducted by Wendi Richter

Holy shit. Why didn't I think of Austin? Makes sense to me, as well. All of what you mentioned would make it perfect. Add in the fact that Austin got his start through Chris Adams in WCCW, and Austin would make the perfect guy to induct the Freebirds.
Charger, your class is impressive. Everybody you listed is way overdue, especially Rude and Demolition.

I'd be very surprised if the HoFed 'Taker until the year after he officially retired. Otherwise, I think that's a pretty great fantasy slate, though I would like to see Owen Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Ray Traylor, and John Tenta as posthumous entrants sooner rather than later, and spots for Mike Rotundo and Ivory.

The rumor going around right now is the WWE doesn't want next year's show going over 4 hours, so instead of putting restrictions on the speeches, they are going to cut down on the number of inductees.

Good. They're going to run out of wrestlers. I'd say there's nothing wrong with revealing one at the Rumble, one before the next PPV, one at the next PPV, and one final one after it. 3-4 per year is plenty.

Judging by Shawn Michaels, they won't blow the Undertaker's farewell match the same weekend they induct him. If it even is his farewell match. I'll believe that when the casket's in the ground. And maybe not even then.

When is WM going to Chicago? Can't wait for the CM Punk induction!

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Demolition never goes in. With all the legal troubles with Eady, Vince can easily hold a grudge and, while they were obviously iconic to those of us who were WWF fans at the time, their window is actually relatively short. I think the number of eighties acts going in will slowly decrease in favor of nineties and even millenial performers, which means that borderline guys like that will have a decreasing likelihood of getting in as time goes on.

I agree that they -should- go in, on themesong alone, but I recognize that it's WWE's Hall of Fame (aka just another thing they use to promote their product, not an actual museum), so politics and practicality play a part.

I actually would have disagreed about the Demos until this year. If the Bushwackers can go in, Demolition certainly can. I don't even think the Bushwackers are bad, and the Sheepherders were awesome, but they were a joke team in WWE.

Sure, why not. We'd all better say our act of contrition!

On the other hand, Vince has shown a willingness to bury the hatchet and re-build bridges that had previously been burned to ashes. Look at Warrior. Look at Bruno. Look at Hogan and Savage.

Hell, even the Road Warriors (particularly Hawk) had some pretty harsh things to say about Vince (including insinuating that he and HBK were gay with each other), yet they were inducted.

Also, while I'm not a big HHH fan, I will credit him with being much more attuned to the history of the business than Vince. I think HHH is much more willing to give guys from the 80's and 90's and earlier inductions.

There really isn't a lot of big time guys not all ready in.

Taker, Triple H, and Jericho are all active enough where they really shouldn't go in. Sting is possible part of this group as well.

Angle is active for another promotion so he's a no go. Same for Rey Mysterio Jr. Alberto Del Rio is active too...but not exactly a sure fire HOF guy at this point.

King Kong Bundy, Sid, Bam Bam Bigelow, and JBL all main evented at Mania and could all go in at any time. But there isn't a headliner from that list.

Punk would be a great pick...but no chance. Plus I think if he mends things, it will be to come back as a performer.

Batista makes sense...but it makes more sense to hold of until 2017 when he'll be promoting Guardians 2.

Based on that...JBL and Christian seem like REALLY safe picks for the 2016 HOF.

BFG--no headliners? Sid is the master of the Squirrels. How is that not a headliner?
Steve Austin should no more induct the 'Birds than Hasbeen Hogan shoulda inducted Mach. Flair, Lawler, even Leapin' Lanny woulda all been better choices.
Jimmy Garvin's not a bad choice. Need a Von Erich? There's always Lacey.
It's as close as Mania will ever be to Oklahoma, isn't it time Cowboy Bill Watts went in? Like the Rick Rude idea.

Says you. Maybe Hayes wants Austin to induct him (or maybe he doesn't). If Macho's brother says Hogan was the perfect guy to induct Savage, then so be it.

Maybe Jimmy Garvin gets inducted as well. He was also a Freebird, after all. I like the Lacey idea due to the obvious connection, but I'd imagine it'd be someone Hayes is close to or has a good relationship with IRL, wrestling history be damned.

Personally, I'd love to see Iceman Parsons do the inducting.

On April 4, 2009, Watts was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2009.

HHH is about as big a wrestling nerd as some of us here, a point people sometimes forget about when cursing his name to the high heavens for OMG BURYING!

Rick Rude needs to go in and next year makes sense because he DID get his first world title run in the last days of WCCW. I don't know if he just fell through the cracks or if he pissed off the wrong people when he jumped to WCW in '97 (probably that one), but adulthood has made me appreciate how great Rude was and he deserves his due, featuring an incredible induction speech by Paul Fucking Heyman.

To ThisWasSting: while agree there were probably options just as suitable as Hogan to induct Savage (Flair or Lawler both would have sufficed), Hogan is Hogan and you can't fault their thinking of having Hogan the WWF's first, true crossover sensation induct the Savage, probably the second biggest crossover star.

Austin inducting the Birds in Dallas makes all the sense in the world followed by Hayes getting on the mic and bringing the fucking house down.

I'll take my consultants fee by direct deposit, WWE.

I wouldn't fault that selection, but here's the thing: Steamboat was Savage's breakout match, but they never so much as sniffed each other after Wrestlemania 3.

Hogan was linked to Savage for basically his own career and there were about a million chapters to their rivalry on screen and entirely too many chapters off screen.

Say what you want about Hogan (rightfully so), but Hogan was the biggest rival Savage ever had and vice versa.

I only think they'd do Austin for a few reasons

1) Austin often tells the tale of how without Hayes, there never would have been an Austin 3:16 promo. When Austin got back from getting stitched up at the hospital in KOTR 96, it was Hayes who pulled him aside and told him that Jake had cut a religious promo on him. Austin took that, and came up with the Promo that is not so famous

2) Austin was a huge FAN of the Freebirds, and you can hear it in his voice. He has stories of watching them, driving hours to see them, etc.

3) Many of the current fans never got to WATCH the Freebirds in their heyday. But, they do know Austin, and if HE holds Hayes in such high regard, it will change the way the younger fans listen to Hayes' induction speech.
