Ultimate Match ShOOwdOOwn Talk
Running with the Ultimate Match idea. Original post below.
Whenever I find the time, I plan to run another one of these shOOwdOOwn gimmicks. We've got Diva, Wrestler, Tag Team, and Manager taken care of.
Who's next!? It's up to yOOu guys to decide! I gave some examples with each poll option to encourage some discussion on which direction we
take this in. Some of them would be difficult to make into a tournament, but that's where some of the discussion comes in! Questions, comments,
suggestions, ideas, concerns, etc. are all welcome.
Finisher - Stunner, Cutter, Goldberg's Spear, Sweet Chin Music, SSP, Edge's Spear, F-5, Vertebreaker, Roman's Spear, Worm, Pedigree,
Kaitlyn's Spear, etc.
Submission - Cattle Mutilation, Last Chancery, Bret's Sharpshooter, armbar, Liontamer, Googleplates, armbar, Rock's Sharpshooter, armbar,
etc.
Promo - Cactus's Cane Dewey, Savage's Cream of the Crop, Steiner's Against All Odds, Dusty's Hard Times, Punk's
Pipebomb, Reigns's Tater Tots, Heyman's One Night Stand, etc.
Music - Nakamura's Rising Sun, Balor's Catch Your Breath, Kane's Slow Chemical, Jesse & Festus's Biscuits & Gravy,
Madison's Killa Queen, American Males's American Males, Cena's Appledough, Punk's Cult of Personality, etc.
Prop - Snow's Head, Jake's snake, Sandman's cane, Sting's bat, Orton's cast, New Jack's kitchen cutlery,
Regal's knuckles, Abyss's Janice, Abby's hepatitis fork, Saturn's Moppy, HHH's Sledgey, etc.
Match - Taker/HBK Mania 25, Brock/Angle Mania 19, HHH/HBK Mania 20, Hardy/Sting Victory Road '11, Bossman/Snow Unforgiven '99,
AJ/Joe/Daniels Unbreakable '05, etc.
Event - Mania X, Mania XX, Mania XXX, Starrcade '83, Uncensored '95, Rumble 2000, Victory Road '11, December to Dismember, etc.
Trio - Freebirds, New Day, 3MB, Mean Street Posse, Jersey Triad, X-Factor, xXx, etc.
Stable - nWo, DX, Horseman, nWo Wolfpac, Bullet Club, nWo Japan, nWo Hollywood, nWo Elite, nWo B-Team, lWo, bWo, bWo Japan, MEM, etc.
Commentator - Heenan, Solie, Caudle, Mongo, Russell, Ross, Adamle, etc.
Other/Mabey - All suggestions are welcome! Greatest beard? Matt Cross or Daniel Bryan. Greatest ass? Bayley or Billy Gunn. Greatest set of tits? Trish
or Big E. Greatest pyro? Kevin Nash or JBL.

Music this year, then Inanimate Object Sidekicks next summer.
ETA:
might have to re-do the Women all over again someday because just in NXT/WWE alone there's been a complete sea-change in terms of multiple
viable candidates for the Best-Ever

I went match just so I can get super annoyed at all the people who think the HBK/Taker matches were good. My 2nd choice would be finisher. 3rd is
stable. 4th is back to women.

This really needs to be done. Since we've covered all bases of individual wrestlers/managers, this seems like the next logical step (not to
mention I think it would produce a ton of great debate/discussion). Debating between, say, Savage/Steamboat from WrestleMania III vs Austin/Hart from
WrestleMania 13 or Eddie/Rey from Halloween Havoc 1997 vs RVD/Jerry Lynn from Living Dangerously 1999 would just be a ton of fun.
So best matches of all time is my easy vote and I guess best entrance music would be my second choice.

I had voted for music since we had previously talked about it....but would agree on match, in general, and especially since "inanimate object" is
quite a bit less likely to create aneurysms than things we've done in the past....music probably fits more into that mold while, as Dev
mentioned, match is gonna bring out a lot of passion. Do music after match since we'll probably still be in recovery mode from match.

Best Match could be really difficult to pull off with the way that WWE and others keep harassing YouTube and the other sites over copyright. Even
short clips of things (e.g. the unexpected WCW classic of Lodi vs Lenny Lane that stunned everyone with what a great match it was) you wouldn't
expect to be worth the lawyer's time are hard to find.

I love the idea of match, but jesus, how do you narrow THAT field? I assume we'd have to go through some sort of nomination process, but holy
schnikes, if you thought best wrestler was subjective, holy crap.

I like the idea of doing entrance music, but that might be hard on Matte as a lot of WWE guys have multiple theme songs. It's also one category
where we may not be able to predict the winners as easily as before.

I'm dying to see Matte's legendary research filter through Farmer Burns Dr. Roller matches, and am curious which Lewis - Sonnenberg match
he picks...
Oh! How can we forget about Yusuf Ismail! I think he'll have to expand the field to at least 512.
This is gonna be great

Limiting it to WWE Network leaves out New Japan, RoH, TNA, Chikara (I know there are Chikara devotees here, even if I haven't seen it) and lucha
stuff. As a former TNA fan, before they went to hell, there are definitely some entries worth considering (AJ/Daniels/Joe, AJ/Abyss in the cage). And,
while I'm not as informed on all that, I'm sure there are Bryan Danielson matches from RoH that would be pretty worthy, not to mention
Tyler Black, Claudio Castognoli, Austin Aries, Samoa Joe, etc., etc.
Also, are we going strictly singles matches, or do tag team matches get consideration, too?

Wait ... wait ... wait. There is pro wrestling outside of WWE? Why hasn't Michael Cole informed me of this?
In all seriousness, I was more just trying to do Matte a solid because searching through grainy Japanese VHS videos is bad enough when porn is
involved. Actually doing it for wrestling takes a level of nerd commitment I couldn't ask of anyone.
How about greatest matches of all time from Pay Per Views available on the WWE Network?

Maybe use Meltzer's star rating? The guy seems to have reviewed everything from promotions all over the world. While some of it is bullshit, how
many universally-acclaimed matches has he reviewed that aren't at least a ***? I think keeping it at 3 star to 5 star will trim a lot of the
fat.
But yeah, Jesus that would be a lot pre-liminary rounds before getting to the fun stuff. If it wouldn't work, I'd for for best finisher or
move.

Yeah, I think keeping it narrowed down to universally acclaimed matches would be a good idea. The Ultimate Wrestler Showdown was awesome and the work
Matte put into it was even more awesome, but I don't think we'd necessarily need to go that big with a greatest matches showdown; maybe
keep it short and sweet with like 200 matches involved and not roughly 1,000 like the wrestler showdown.
DKBroiler's idea of narrowing it down to only PPV matches on the WWE Network or something similar isn't a bad idea, as it would guarantee
that anyone with the WWE Network (which I assume is most of us here) has access to the matches and can view any and all of them if needed for
memory-refresher purposes or if it's something they've never seen before. On the flipside, that would of course eliminate free TV matches
and stuff like TNA from the running, so I'm not sure how popular of a decision that would be.
Another idea that would maybe save Matte time and work would be for everyone to nominate like 20 matches (with no duplicates, so if someone else has
already nominated, say, Austin/Rock from WM X-7, I wouldn't include it in my 20 matches) and then use all of those matches to populate the
showdown.

Let's not open nominations up to gamesmanship or minimize it as much as possible.
64 entry field (or max 128). Everyone nominate 5 (or up to 10 or ?).
Sort nominations by # of noms.
Draw the line at 64.

Everybody nominating five would probably be tough. I'd say ten. That or we get 'divisions' in advance and do five in each.
Potential divisions if I were God/Matte:
Hardcore
Tag
Singles
Hidden Gems (a bracket for underappreciated favorites)

I'm bumping this because I like the match idea (and I like the idea of running one showdown every year). I posted in mikeb's Inanimate
Object thread and then checked his profile to see he hasn't logged in for a month, so I'm not sure how quickly/slowly that whole thing
will progress.
As for how to run an Ultimate Match Showdown, I'm thinking having open submissions/nominations and compiling a list that way would be the
easiest and most inclusive tactic. Being once-a-year events, I like to do these things kind of big, so I'm thinking either a 512 or 1024
field.
I'd like to ask for 1-25 matches from everybody willing to give their input. I think the field is big enough that I should be able to include
every match that's nominated, so duplicate noms from multiple posters shouldn't lead to any benefit or detriment for the match. Singles,
tag, multi-man, etc. are all eligible. Women's matches won't be included for this one (they're kind of at an unfair disadvantage),
but we'll do an Ultimate Woman's Match Showdown at some point in the future to make up for it.
List your matches in the following format:
Match participants, stipulation, company and event, date
Ex. Sting vs. Jeff Hardy, No DQ match for TNA World Heavyweight Championship, TNA Victory Road, 3/13/11
And if there's a tag team or stable involved, list the names of the members so I can find everything easily when making the bracket.
I think that about covers it. As always, any questions/suggestions are welcome. Let the game of listing things begin!
