OOfficial Discussion Thread for: SmackDown LIVE (August 9, 2016)

Tonight on SmackDown: we'll find out exactly if/how Third Wheel Bray Wyatt fits into the WWE Title picture.... last week, Bray got in between champ Dean Ambrose and #1 Contender Dolph Ziggler, and even got Ziggler to put his title shot on the line.... but Ziggler beat Wyatt to hold onto the SummerSlam title match, and hypothetically SHOULD have sent Bray packing to the back of the line....

But methinks Bray has other plans, as evidenced by Erick Rowan joining Bray in a post-match beatdown last week.... the obvious play? To slap together a tag match in which Ambrose and Ziggler face Bray and Rowan.... and then let nature take its course when Ambrose and Ziggler can't quite bring themselves to trust each other.... a lot of people have been calling for a Dolph heel turn, and no we have the mechanism to pull it off...

John Cena vs. AJ Styles officially agreed to a match at SummerSlam, and that's SD's #2 Priority... last week's often meandering promo seemed to dance around the idea of Styles wanting Cena gone from WWE, and Cena swearing never to leave... dunno if that means to brace for "Loser Leaves Town" or anything like that, but it could use SOME kind of sprucing up, since Styles wasn't exactly strong on the mic last week, and this all has the stink of "Cena has already made Styles, now he just has to win the last match of the feud before we can move on" to it...

Expect replays of the Orton/Lesnar packages from last night... if Orton is, in fact, present, I can't see them doing much more than giving him another match against Fandango, so he can actually get the win that he did NOT get last week, due to Lesnar's interference...

As I expected, WWE did the obvious and installed Apollo Crews as challenger to Miz's IC Title.... that probably won't set the world on fire, and I definitely would have preferred Kalisto to advance out of last week's 3-way #1 Contender match.... but hey, at least it's not Baron Corbin, amirite?

SD's Women's Division is still a completely wide open affair, with last week's planned debuts of both Carmella and Eva Marie called off before they could even begin (Eva Marie faked an injury to get out of wrestling; Carmella was attacked before her match started, by Nattie), and Becky Lynch remains -- mostly by default -- the most credible performer they have.... maybe try to get mileage out of Carmella/Nattie, and catapult Alexa Bliss (who plays a great bitchy character, and whose ringwork has largely caught up to her persona) into a feud with Becky? All while using any means necessary to make sure Eva Marie (a) does appear on TV while wearing very little, but (b) never actually attempts to wrestle....

American Alpha made an impressive debut last week, to put themselves near the top of a SD tag division that is headed up by the Usos.... the brand is very short on credible heel teams, though, with Breezango probably the best they've got (thanks to a preshow win over the Usos 2 weeks ago)... the Ascension and Vaudevillains seem to be more or less afterthoughts at this point... the Hype Bros are the only other team on the roster, and I don't see them making a heel turn any time soon...

The issue of free agency, and Heath Slater's specific One Man Brand problems will also be front and center tonight... Slater can earn a SD contract if he beats recent free agent signee Rhyno in a match... on-going free agent signings should continue to bolster SD, too (brace yourselves for Curt Hawkins~!), and if there is to be any real follow-up on last night's aside comments about Cesaro maybe wanting to be on SD, and Bryan openly goading the crowd to cheer for that, then that's something they probably mention again tonight as part of a new phase of the brand split in which trades (or outright thefts) of talent come into play...

Side note: one free agent you can forget about, for now, is Shelton Benjamin, who found out during his WWE physical exam that he has a significant shoulder injury... so he did not sign a contract, and instead will have surgery and see if WWE still needs him in 6-8 months...

That is all. End communication....

The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Don't wait till after 10pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

ADR vs. RKO. Two 3-letter acronyms that when combined stand for one word: APATHY.

"Apollo Creed."

Dammit Bryan!! They're gonna yank him off live TV if this keeps happening.

EDIT - Also, going by that opening promo, I guess Ziggler's "I'm fighting for respect!!" storyline is requiring us to forget his world title reign, huh?

Next week DB should just embrace it, and start calling him "Terry Crews".

ETA: All red everything! Including Red Tag outfits that break before she can wrassle.

That was high-larry-yus.

I'd much rather see Bray vs Ambrose.

Miss Paquette + Maryse = best Miz segment ever?

ETA: Eva Marie is on her way from X-Pac to Honky Talk Man heat. Well done writer monkeys.

I would just like to let the record show that my previous post in this thread (Daniel Bryan's live flub, etc.) was from me unknowingly watching last week's Smackdown and thinking it was this week's. Still adjusting to the PS Vue viewing experience. Carry on.

Edit: In all seriousness, I get what they're trying to do with Eva and taking into consideration all of the built in heat she has I guess it's fine, if maybe a little unnecessary. But we've kind of seen this before with how they debuted Fandango, somebody with some actual talent and charisma, and look where it got him. I feel like this is a weird way of WWE justifying her heat on their own terms instead of people just hating her because she is completely undeserving of her spot on the roster.

Kinda zoning out right now as the human equivalents of Zanax and tryptophan go at it in the ring right now. Got me to thinking though about where they're going with Ziggler. I'm all for the World Title shot, but I'm curious as to how he's going to come out on the other side of it. Still a plucky underdog face? Tweener with a chip on his shoulder? Full on heel? He needs some sort of shakeup as far as his statis quo is concerned and thus far I feel like we're only seeing the same ticked off Dolph that we've been seeing since he lost his last World Title.

I feel like he could benefit from being partnered up with somebody. Some muscle, perhaps. Which got me to thinking about the #TradeCesaro hashtag that got trending last night. Cesaro is in need of someone who can do the heavy lifting on the mic, and we've seen in his pairing with Tyson Kidd that he gels nicely with a more high-flying partner. I think if you adjusted both of their characters a couple of degrees and paired them up they could be kind of another modern version of The New Age Outlaws. I only say "another" because Enzo & Cass have the sing-along aspect of the NAO down pat. But Dolph and Cesaro could be the guys with something to prove to management and could almost go into business for themselves while proving their worth.

I'm probably one of the least sports-minded chaps here on this bOOard, so forgive me for asking but has there ever been an instance of an athlete going in to business for himself, even to the detriment of his own team, just to make sure that he's a hotter prospect as a free agent? Because the thought of Dolph and Cesaro embracing free agency while cherry picking a tag title from one show and maybe a singles title a piece from another show while refusing to commit to either until some proper attention is paid their way would be VERY entertaining.

edit: Afternoon whiskey and typing on my cellphone makes for a wonky post.

Did Slater screw up his 2 kid/4 kid line and Rhyno caught it or was it intentional?

Considering he upped it to 7 after the match, it was intentional.

What are the odds Orton shows up with a cast next week after those chairshots to the arm?

It took 3 weeks of the brand split for WWE to truly not care about either show. Impressive.

Yeah, but three minutes of Alexa eases most of the pain. Carmella's damn cute too but, to paraphrase Dan Fielding, "awww, don't let her talk" anymore.

Rhyno got rounder. Looks like he picked up all the weight Big Show lost. Must be from all the good eating on the campaign trail.

The Eva Marie thing amuses me greatly. With JBL commenting about "everything he's heard about Eva Marie's training", it feels like one of those deliberate trolls of the IWC (and hey, I like being pandered to!)

Alexa was very fun and a welcome addition. We'll see if Becky Lynch ever recovers from that burial.

I thought the way Bray used Dean to block the superkick was kinda smooth looking. I also fully favor the continued transition to just letting Dolph superkick for a finish - it looks much sharper and cooler than the dumb Zig-Zag. Kudos to Ambrose for the post-match DDT, too. Stone Cold must be proud.

I forgot this was even on yesterday. And it took me a bit to care enough to look at results. I'm glad that Ziggler is finally getting his shot, realize this is probably the only way AJ Styles wins a major title in WWE, and is probably the only way Bray is given a real shot to be a threat (granted its only because there's less to threaten), but it just really has a B-Show taint to it. None of the results I read make me think otherwise.

Dan Fielding? Good Lord. I was as big a "Night Court" fan as anyone, but that's some reaching back into obscurity for 2016. Nice job!

Nothing really stood out all that much this episode, aside from Slater and Alexa, but still, nothing that I'd really view as bad either.

All in all, I'd probably give this a 7 out of 10. Like last week, this was easily the better show this week.

I'm enjoying it too and think they should just take it to extreme levels of absurdity. Like, keep this going for six more months, and every week it could be like this is the week where she's finally going to wrestle, but then something always happens.

And on the subject of the women, I'd never seen any of Alexa Bliss' stuff from NXT, but I liked what I saw last night.

And apparently most of OO as well, as it seems like the discussion in the Smackdown thread has been declining week to week.
