OOfficial Ratings/Discussion Thread for: WWE RAW (April 19, 2010)
OO Nation: All discussion pertaining to RAW (airing April 19, 2010) should be done in this thread. It will remain pinned at the top of the
Current Events section for the remainder of the week. In discussing the program, we'd love it if you shared your numerical rating for
the show (from a low of 0.0 to a high of 5.0, in any increment of one-tenth of a point). For full details on the ratings scale and how to join in on
this informal "Battle of the Brands," please be sure to check out the OOfficial
Guidelines for TV Ratings/Discussion Threads.
Tonight on RAW: Normally I don't do RAW's preview because I don't really keep up with them. But there's none up and
this week is a special occasion where the existing stories might not even matter. Most of RAW's roster is stuck in Europe as a result to no air
traffic. As a result Smackdown's roster will be invading RAW tonight and who knows what that means for stories and the Extreme Rules build?
Here is a list of people you probably won't see tonight, or at least not live.
quote: The superstars stuck in Europe includes John Cena, Batista, Randy Orton, Bret Hart, Miz, Big Show, Sheamus, Mark Henry, Ted DiBiase, Kofi
Kingston, Evan Bourne, MVP, Chris Masters, Chavo Guerrero and Hornswoggle.
Eve Torres, Maryse and Kelly Kelly are among the Divas who also likely won't be at RAW tonight.
Who is around? Besides most of SD's roster there's also HHH, who skipped the European tour to film a movie. Word is now going around
that WWE is pulling out the stops and we can expect the return of the Undertaker as well. WWE will do its best to build to Extreme Rules even without
a lot of the relevant parties and we still have the likes of Jericho, Edge, CM Punk, and Rey Mysterio to do their work, as well as HHH whose opponent
is stuck but he can still do some mic work on him.
And of course there's the guest host, and this week its the cast of the SNL inspired film MacGruber. If you don't know, this is a campy
McGuyver parody with a dopey screw up who always seems to screw up the mission. Half of the WWE roster is in the film and the actors Will Forte,
Kristen Wiig, and Ryan Phillipe will apparently be showing up in character and seemed set to fight the evil communist Kozlov after last week's
setup. I have no idea if Kozlov is around but I'm sure the guys will find something retarded to do which you may or may not enjoy depending on
your brand of humor.
And as always Rick will be doing his show-to-show Tale of the Tape preview at OO proper and you should go and check that out at
http://www.oowrestling.com/columns/oo/20100419.shtml. If its not up when you click check back later and it will be.
The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Let your voice be heard and your thoughts on Brand Supremacy be known. Don't wait till after 11pm to post,
either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

Ya know, this could wind up being a big ratings break for TNA, especially if they make a comment about ALL of their roster being in attendance
"unlike the other guys" or some such.

No it can't. Lets not start that nonsense so then when TNA pulls the same underwhelming rating it always does some idiot can laugh that they
missed an opportunity and this is evidence that they're terrible even though the reality of it is that the ratings gap has nothing to do with
what either show is advertising on any given night and everything to do with the actual established fanbases that exist. RAW's audience
isn't gonna flip on Impact because John Cena and Randy Orton aren't there. Maybe 5-10% might. Most of them will just watch RAW anyway or
not watching wrestling.

If anything, WWE using Smackdown guys will wind up having a product more similar to TNA tonight than usual if it goes with the Smackdown brand of more
wrestling and less everything else. Coupled with it somehow now becoming something of a "special" type of Raw that people might want to just see
what things might happen when half the roster is missing...this might actually somehow help Raw this week.
Although I don't expect much of a difference at all.
---des...don't take what Lucky said as personal. I could see why he'd want to nip that one nice and fast. if you like TNA, you do not
want extra expectations, especially in a situation that really shouldn't have any and let people who want to see TNA fail have more ammo.

I have nothing against you and if I have a pattern of "prickish" responses its simply an accidental pattern, or one totally unassociated with the
name I see when I'm responding.
Its just that being an "optimist" is not an inherently positive trait. Optimism can kill you much quicker than pessimism can. The realistic
outlook is that TNA won't make a big ratings jump tonight, next week, next month, or in 6 months. IF TNA grows their audience it will be a
gradual thing as they slowly chip away at the walls WWE has built or it will come because of some HUGE undeniably exciting event. It won't
happen because WWE is having a weird week where some of their draws are absent.
Thinking that it will is just setting TNA and its fans and optimists up for disappointment. In 24 hours we'll be looking at another thread
titled "RAWless RAW crushes Impact, failure yet?" And then we'll have the same conversation we've had most weeks since this "war"
began. This is a war of attrition. Its guerrilla warfare. There will be no big battle any time soon. TNA will either wear WWE down until the day
when they can fight them head on or TNA will retreat when the forces prove to be too insurmountable. (And I'm not a history or military guy so
I'm sure I screwed up some easy metaphors there.)
And while I in no way accuse you of this, there ARE those who are actively talking about impossible goals for TNA because it serves as an easy way to
tear them down. There's also people working with no ill intent and just genuine optimism. But either way, if you go into tonight thinking
there's much of ANY chance Impact could score a big number than I'd bet most any sum of money you're going to come out disappointed.
That's just the reality of the situation. And if we keep ignoring that stuff and keep having a short sighted view of this "war" then
we're just going to have disappointment after disappointment, which will also have the result in making TNA look lamer and lamer.
And none of this has to do with RAW. So lets all celebrate MacGruber and that Jericho segment that I bet people are gonna love and I just won't
get.
And yeah, as I said over in the Volcano thread this whole thing is actually having the result of making me WANT to watch RAW when I was pretty much
going to ignore it this week thanks to the MacGruber nonsense.

The full tale of the tape is, indeed, posted at http://www.oowrestling.com/columns/oo/20100419.shtml. So read it.
I, for one, see this as a huge lemons-into-lemonade chance for WWE. The mere act of getting fans talking and engaged is a boost for them; there will
be a curiosity factor tonight that they've not had since the night after WM.
It'll just boil down to what they do with that increased level of interest.
Like I said in the preview, it could break either way, but my hope is that simply be reducing the amount of time the idiot Writer Monkeys have to
screw with and over-script tonight's show, we'll get something that feels fresh and interesting. The one main fear I have: they take
pre-written "set pieces" from tomorrow's SD taping, and just shoe-horn them into tonight's RAW, and then take the extra day to
re-rewrite SD, leaving both shows with the worst of both worlds.
We'll see... but my fingers are crossed for something out-of-the-ordinary. For better or for worse, tonight's show should be something
unlike anything we've seen WWE deliver before (or at least: in a really long time)....

That's my opinion on the whole situation. I mean, I'd be watching regardless (as I've actually been enjoying RAW a fair amount
lately), but I'm definitely more interested in tonight's show than I would be if it were just another regular episode.
And WWE.com has confirmed the Undertaker will be on tonight.

Maybe Swagger will get his first win on RAW!
I'd be surprised if most WWE fans even knew what was going on. If i'd been a little busier at work today, I'd have no idea.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere there is no guest host next week (with the draft and all). So...that's something for whoever cares that
much about it.
Time to face it if you need to...this isn't ending at least until the Rock hosts Raw. So if you want it to end...better start a mail campaign
or something.

The Rick is a happy boy tonight....and so am I. Lillian Garcia is in the building!!
That new guy that have announcing is way too annoying. For example, when he introduces Triple H.
"TRIPLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAch."
Wouldn't it be nice if Lillian said screw it and stayed for a bit longer??
(pre-emptive +.5 points for Lillian pitching in to help tonight.)

With HHH stalling at the beginning, I thought this was going to be a trainwreck.
But blowing up R-Truth gets my first 5.0. MacGruber is awesome! If the rest of the show is Cena, Batista and Orton satellite feeds, it'll
still be awesome.

HHH/Punk promo was good, if a bit long.
McIntyre/Hardy was pointless and dull.
Swagger/Taker never should've happened. Champ can't beat anyone clean and keeps losing non-title matches to every established guy he
faces? Reminds me of Rey and Sheamus's reigns, as well as Punk's first reign. They were all awful. I don't have high hopes for
this one.
Main event was solid.
MacGruber stuff was awesome. Greatest Guest Host segment(s) in a long long time, if ever. I like that they did them in character too.
Seeing Lilian again was nice.
3.0 for the show, mostly thanks to the Guest Host stuff, which was trainwrecky in the most bizarre and perfect way.

The worst wrestling show I have ever seen.
As purely a WWE guy who regular chatters can attest to as a person who finds the logic in the insanity, there's nothing that I can say to defend
this monstrosity.
I'm not sure if they were trying to be purposely bad to make normal RAW look better.
I don't even want to vote for fear of looking like a smarky douche, this is now the second show in as many months that has crushed any and all
excitement that I have about the product.
The matches were wrong, the booking was wrong, the skits were wrong, the confusion over the MacGruber character was stupid, the logic of the entire
Kozlov match was wrong, the Swagger result was wrong, the length that matches went on for was wrong, the comedic skits were wrong, the Sheamus
producer beatdown was wrong, the commentators were often wrong.
For me, it's a 0.5. It gets half a point because it featured a half decent wrestling match in the ME, there are no redeeming qualities
to this, and today I'm embarrassed to be a fan of WWE; especially when I knew what was happening over on the inaccessible TNA. I was going to
watch Extreme Rules before this show, but I really just might not bother any more, I've lost faith in the company to put on a half-decent
show.
For those who will say "this was funny, that was funny". Firstly, I don't share your humour, to me it was excruciating. Secondly, when I
want to see a comedy show, I won't watch Raw, I watch Raw to see wrestling storylines and wrestling. If the focus was on that tonight,
I'm sure I would be giving it a higher mark, but tonight they turned a 2 hour Raw into a 40 minute MacGruber commercial with interspersed the
odd wrestling match.

Best Raw I've seen since before Wrestlemania. And it didn't have the Raw roster.
Really the only part I didn't like was the McIntyre-Hardy match and that was just boring.
And Swagger losing didn't bother me since I think he sucks and is boring.
I'm going 4.0. More thoughts tomorrow after a good night's sleep.

Yeah, I thought the McGruber stuff was lame. When I want to see comedy movie characters going for the LOLs, I'll go to the movies. I don't
mind the actors being around to promote their movies, but that in-character stuff was awful.
WWE had the chance to to go for Monday Night Smackdown but just dragged that roster down to beneath Raw's usual level of mediocrity. Sadly, I
don't think it was intentional, either. 1.5

I didn't mind the show, given the circumstances of having the whole Raw roster stuck in Ireland.
I liked the Lilian Garcia announcer cameo. The HHH/Punk opening was okay, though given that Mysterio shaved out prop hair, it sort of gives away the
PPV outcome. Given the long cord, I thought for sure Serena or Gallows were going to pull the plug to make the save.
Hardy vs McIntyre was blah! Nothing but time filler.
I have to believe the McGruber stuff was stretched out to be filler. I'll choose a serious show 10 times out of 10, but this wasn't the
worst guest host. Maybe because the McGruber guy is relaxed and natural in front of a crowd and cameras. Khaluber was dumb given Khali was recently
written off. I mean if they wanted somebody for that spot, why not Kane?
I didn't mind the swagger vs Undertaker finish at all. It was my desired finish actually. I thought they'd go for a cop out finish where
Swagger would bail out or something. Swagger is mere weeks from losing in preliminary matches, won the title underhandedly, and now went 15 minutes
with the legendary Undertaker. He gets the rub from the very solid and competitive match and loses nothing doing the job.
The match was really solid. Swagger is a natural in the ring, and didn't look much smaller than the Undertaker. I don't think folks
realize how tall he is.
I didn't watch the ME.
I'd put up Undertaker vs Swagger against anything on TNA this week, including the hotshotting of the title to RVD.
edit to add - it would be funny as hell if Truth was written off like that and "future endeavored" tomorrow.

Bad comedy taken out of SNL taking up a ton of time.
Swagger losing to a non-active wrestler for no good reason at all.
Lots of videos.
No confidence in the Smackdown or midcard roster being able to entertain wrestling fans.
Rave reviews and even a backhanded shot at TNA.
Yep. Pretty much what I should have expected.
