The OOfficial 2010 NCAA college football thread- IN EYE-POPPING 3D!

So last year there was a thread about college football. Some people came and we argued about college football a little bit and sometimes we all agreed and most everybody had a good time. And then football ended with Alabama winning a national championship and everybody was sad. Then things across the college football landscape went all wacky. Nebraska joined the Big Ten because Notre Dame won't. Then Colorado moved to the Pac-10 and the Big XII said "good riddance Colorado", but then Texas and the entire Big XII South said "us too" and then the Big XII was all like "oh shit" so Boise State, who wanted to join the Pac-10 for the easier conference schedule decided to join the Mountain West instead but then Texas said "ah we're just fucking with ya, we just want more money is all" and the Big XII was like "whew" but the Pac-10 was all "dammit!" and so they finally just said"we choose you, PikachUTAH" and everybody across college football was all "way to go, Boise, you could have been big time but you just couldn't wait, could you, you assholes?". And then expansion and realignment rumors continued to swirl and everyone thought Miami was going to join the SEC and Notre Dame was going to replace the Lions in the NFL and one 16 team megaconference was going to emerge calling themselves Skynet but then the Big Ten said "that's enough damage for one offseason- BUT WE'LL BE BACK!" and they sort of laughed evilly and we knew this wasn't over. And then the smoke cleared and the Pac 10 had tweleve teams and the Big 12 had ten teams and the Big 10, which always had eleven teams, now had twelve teams and across the nation people who already found college football conferences confusing wept bitterly. And then just the other day BYU got drunk (which they totally aren't allowed to do) and kinda hiccuped and said "hey... fuck Notre Dame... we're just as pretty as they are" and then they threw up on the sofa but not before declaring that they would now try to be a football independent because they want to be precious like ND too. And they haven't sobered up enough yet for anyone to remind them that they're BYU, not Notre Dame, so we still have no idea if this will actually happen. And because the other conferences "forgot" to tell the Mountain West they're done expanding for the year, the MWC snatched Nevada and Fresno State from the WAC and the WAC is very sad even though nobody had the heart to tell them they were doomed from the second Boise left them. And somewhere in America, an old woman looked and Nevada was the last team she needed to finish her "Expansion Bingo" card and she won a gift card for a Moons Over My Hammy and went home pleased until she realized her grandchildren still hadn't called, which is really sad if you think about it, so call your grandma today, won't you? Anyway, all of these changes won't even begin until next season but it was about as action packed of an off-season as you could ask for.

And lest you think that expansion was the only exciting thing going on, other things happened too. Pete Carroll bolted to the NFL like a deer who heard a twig snap and we were all "WTF?" and then the NCAA struck USC like the fist of a vengeful god and we were all "ohhhhhhhhh, now it makes sense" and then we realized what a cowardly pussy Pete Carroll really is and there was much schadenfreude and then we all realized USC's new head coach was Layne "Walking NCAA Rules Infraction" Kiffin and there was mirthful laughter and more schadenfreude. Then Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli got arrested for the eleventy billionth time and the Ducks finally sent him packing, but Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt remembered he is a piece of human garbage and said "Ole Miss will be happy to have him!". And the NCAA is letting Masoli play this year, even though he would have had to sit a year if he was a regular well-behaved student athlete who had transfered instead of getting booted off a different team, because the NCAA thinks it's very important to never make any fucking sense at all times. And then an Arkansas reporter was fired for wearing a Florida hat to a press conference and most of Arkansas called into the horrible local sports radio programs in a tizzy demanding her head and 48 other states covered their mouths behind a fist, trying not to let Arkansas see their laughter, except for Mississippi, who is illiterate and has no idea that this actually happened.

Whew! What an offseason!

But now here we are, only two weeks away from the new season! Yay! Now the talk will shift from that tomfoolery to what's actually happening on the field! The preseason top 25 is out and it's kind of what you'd expect except that Boise is ranked #5, so that's new and different.

So with 2 weeks to go til kickoff, it was time to start this new thread. What are your thoughts, hopes, dreams, and expectations for this season? Anyone want to make any bold predictions?

That's probably not true.

Even so, it won't be Michigan St. Can they even afford to field a football team this year?

They're bankrupt.

Actually...does he mean the Big 10 with 12 teams or the Big 12 with 10 teams?

Cause he could be right since he covers 2 conferences with one statement.

ETA: Nice intro there CiG

Oregon's schools just keep providing better and better stories -

From Deadspin.com -

quote:

Oregon State Lineman Gets Naked, Tased

The college football arrest of the year award was handed out early, as a Beaver freshmen snuck into a house, stripped nude, and attempted to tackle officers.

Tyler Thomas redshirted last season, giving him plenty of time to mastermind his Sunday morning arrest.

At about 4:51 a.m., police were called to 519 N.W. 14th Street after a 32-year-old woman reported there was a naked man in the upstairs office of her residence.

When officers arrived, they ordered him to get on the ground several times, but he refused.

Then Thomas, who had reportedly been drinking, got into a "three-point stance" and lunged at the officers, who Tased him.

Thomas was charged with criminal trespass, criminal mischief and resisting arrest, and was kicked off the team today. If 2009 was Oregon's year of shenanigans, 2010 is shaping up to be the real Civil War.

And just when the story can't get any better, here's the guy's mugshot -

Chris, since I rarely have the time to watch any college football and my alma mater didn't have a football team, I don't have a lot of interest. But your off season summary was brilliant. I'm looking forward to your full recap of the season with every bit as much wit and source links so I don't have to pay that close of attention.

Thank you in advance.

I don't care, as long as UConn lays a beatdown on Michigan in their September 4th opener.

I just want Boise to run the table Again and hear why they aren't good enough to be put in the BCS title game. Especially this season with Va Tech and Oregon State on the schedule.
And seriously, why doesn't Chris Peterson get more job offers? You could say that first season he was winning with Hawkins players, but since then?

And CiG. Awesome Recap/Pre-ramble I'll be checking this forum waaay more often with this thread up.

I'm just interested in seeing how my ECU Pirates do this year. New coach, new QB...which will probably equal "mediocre season."

Gooker, can't tell you much about your Pirates you don't already know, but people around here always thought VERY highly of Ruffin McNeill. The standard line of thinking was he did about as well with the Texas Tech defenses considering with what he was given to work with (Leach tending to recruit HEAVILY on offense and the fact the defense was constantly on the field with the quick strike offenses TTU had)

I will be curious to see what Texas does this season. Garrett Gilbert showed flashes of being really good against Alabama, but the O-Line and RB situation is highly questionable.

Oklahoma has a chance to be REALLY good too. stoops always seems to have a big crop of athletes, and Landry Jones got some good playing time last season.

Nebraska is getting alot of love nationally it seems, but Their QB (Zach something) has to prove he can make plays. and EVERY school in the conference (except Colorado) will be out to get that "Last Win" against the Huskers

Bama will be good again, Notre Dame will be intersting to watch. Washington could well be a "Sleeper" Bowl team. And to make sportsguy Happy. Wisconsin will give Ohio State a real run for the Big Ten Title

Thanks for the insight on McNeill, TexShark. I definitely like the fact that he's an ECU graduate and has history with the school. Hopefully that will keep him from bolting after a few years (coughcoughSkipHoltzcoughcough).

Nah, not bitter, Eric. More mystified. Like, I knew he'd be leaving eventually for a bigger, better school (let's face it, ECU isn't exactly Miami, FSU, Auburn, etc.) but...UCF? That was kinda out of left field and is a complete lateral, if not backwards, move for him. The guy is an awesome coach and got a lot out of ECU. I was glad to have him as long as we did. I heard he's got family in south Florida, which is fine, but it was just a surprise that UCF was the school he left for. No hard feelings. At least it wasn't a "Lane Kiffin leaving Tennessee" situation.

I...am an idiot. Still, USF doesn't exactly set the world on fire. I remember when there was minor talk he could go to Tennessee, which I easily could've imagined. Anyway, I digress...

In the wake of UNC's newest scandal in regards to their players' academic performance, I'm looking forward to their season crumbling. Sorry Eric.

Eh, it was bound to happen. You know we can't ever get close to being good at football. Whatever happens, I hope the players involved are dealt with. I'm a UNC sports fan who got into UNC, but turned them down, but I'll always respect them more for academics. I hope they get it figured out and maybe we can go 6-6 again like in the old days.

And fuck both of you.

Skip Holtz leaving just means his new school gets the Sloppy Dr. Lou Blowjob on-air now, that's all. South Florida is a nice stepping-stone and all, but really nothing big is going to happen until he gets his next job.

What, Butch Davis involved in scandal? You don't say! Still it was pretty funny to see UNC in actual discussions about the football season.

So the idiots running the Big 10 are close to removing Michigan-Ohio State as the last game on the schedule for both teams. I've mentioned it before when discussing the expansions, but the administrators of the Big 10 are morons. Thick-skulled, no-brained, useless morons. It was a shock that they led the expansion charge considering it was a pro-active move but, they Big 10'd it but just stopping at Nebraska. Now they want to kill off the thing that's made their conference.

The thing that has their panties in bunches is they're afraid of Michigan and Ohio State playing two games in a row, since they're going to be in seperate divisions. Ignoring the fact the games will be weeks apart, the obvious solution is to just have both teams in the same division. That way the final game still means something (getting to the championship game) and it opens up possibilities for the non-Michigan/OSU teams to get at the Big 10 title. But I'll give them a pass on that, since Michigan/OSU are their big money-big name teams; they obviously want to ensure them as much exposure as possible, which will only benefit the conference. The sticking point behind this is, the braintrust at the Big 10 have decided to not count out-of-division games for the divisional title. That means that not only do the out-of-conference games not matter for the Big 10, but when Michigan plays Ohio State when both are in different divisions the game won't matter for either team's chances at getting into the championship game.

So we again come to the obvious solution of, DUH, making sure all Big 10 games count in order to win your division and get to the championship game. Naturally this being the logical answer to the problem, the Big 10 is deciding on moving the Michigan-Ohio State game to the middle of the season and still leaving no meaning behind the game other than "both schools want the other to die". Fantastic. Thanks Big 10!

Morons.

I don't think Butch Davis is known for being involved in scandals - he's more known for cleaning up programs with scandals, so this is a first.

And yeah, it was nice to think we'd have a shot at something better than 8-4 this year. Still holding out hope though...

So apparently Jeremiah Massoli is ineligible at Ole Miss.

As much as the NCAA gets things wrong, I think they got this one right. I think Massoli should sit out his year, be forced to take and pass the "Park Ranger" classes not offered at Oregon (seriously?) and THEN let him play in 2011 if Ole Miss still wants him.

That's pretty funny, because it would require Michigan winning more than 5 games for it to happen.
