In a blockbuster trade that changes the complexion of the Eastern Conference, the Magic are getting Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson from the Suns
and Gilbert Arenas from the Wizards.

Well, they obviously needed to do something -- Orlando looked AWFUL the past few games. Aside from Howard, they played with absolutely no heart.
I'm taking a 'wait-and-see' approach with this. First off, Rashard Lewis had to fucking go. He was being paid a hell of a lot of
money to average 12 points a game and play no defense. He was always overrated. Vince Carter had good games and bad games, but he'd disappear
at the worst times (i.e., the playoffs) and he's obviously past his prime. I don't like losing either Pietrus or Gortat -- Pietrus was a
great bench player and Gortat was a servicable backup for Howard who could block shots.
Arenas and Jameer Nelson are similar players, so they're going to have to share playing time. But if Arenas can keep the guns away and stay
healthy, he's a big upgrade over Carter at this point. Turkoglu has played poorly for the past couple of years, but he works really well with
Howard and Van Gundy. I'm not saying he'll play as well as our Finals year, but he's always an outside threat, can handle the ball,
and creates huge matchup problems for our rivals. The player I like most is Jason Richardson, as he can get to the rim and shoot, and I think he
might be able to get the team a bit more uptempo. I'm excited to see what all three can do with Howard -- Arenas has never played with a
dominant center.
Problems: None of Orlando's new pickups can play defense very well, but then again, Lewis and Carter couldn't either. Also,
Howard's backups now boil down to Malik Allen and (ugh) Ryan Anderson, so I'd expect more trades to find a good backup center or starting
power forward (Nelson might be on the block now). As of now, Brandon Bass will most likely start at power forward, and I like him, but the big boys
may push him around a bit.
I'm excited, and SOMETHING had to happen, but I don't think the roster moves are done. I'd love to get a real point guard like
Chris Paul in, but I seriously doubt that happening now with Arenas on board.
EDIT after a week --
This trade is definitely a good thing. The team is playing with a ton more energy, and they have two huge victories in the past four days. They
aren't even playing very well right now (especially Arenas), so I can't wait to see the team gel, win more, and become a contender
again.

In (dis)honor of the Cavs' history-making 25 (or is it 26 now?) straight losses, here is Vintage Rock singing how he feels about Cleveland.
Obviously, Rock can see into the future.
Man, I hope the Cavs don't break their losing streak on the Clippers on Friday. I love me some Blake Griffin aka The Rim Reaper.

I heard Barkley just took down Wade and Carter in one awesome rant. Anybody seen the clip?
Sounds funnier than Tracy Morgan.

Not sure if anybody here watched the dunk contest, but I wish I hadn't. That was boring, boring television.

I actually enjoyed the dunk contest this year. All 4 guys brought some good stuff. They need to get rid of the format allowing them so much time
though... a dunk is only about 5% as exciting as it would have been if you hadn't watched them attempt it 6 times already. I also really hate
Kenny Smith's act.

Yeah, it was better when the participants just got one chance. When a dunk takes six tries to get it right, it doesn't have the same oomph. Or
maybe I was spoiled by Dwight Howard destroying the contest a couple of years ago.
Blake Griffin jumping over a car was a neat spot, but any player with leaping ability could have done that. Now if he had dunked over the car
LENGTHWISE then I'd have pissed my pants.

That thing was so fixed for Blake. None of the other guys could have gotten a car and choir.
How about that Knicks trade? Craziness part is everyone acting like Billups is a huge upgrade over Felton. Um, Billups is already over the hill.
Felton made a huge leap playing with amare and would probably only get better.

I agree that Felton has more upside, but Billups was the point guard for a championship team. True, that was about ten years ago, but he still has
the experience factor.
The East just got a LOT more interesting, though. I think the Knicks just jumped themselves into the fourth spot in the East. Orlando now needs to
make another trade just to stay afloat -- today, yesterday. I'd say trade Redick or Anderson for a true power forward.

Celtics, Heat, Bulls, Magic, Hawks are all better then the Knicks.
Also, the NBA is getting to the point of being pointless to watch. The Raptors are horrible. And they aren't one of the bottom 3 teams in the
league. I really wish the NBA had a)non-guranteed contracts and b) franchise player tags c)hard(ish) cap.
Non-guranteed contracts would allow teams to rebuild quickly and make the league younger. It'd also give a lot more power to an owner with
balls.
Franchise player tag would have prevented the LeBron/Bosh facade.
Hard(ish) cap (where there is a set cap, but a franchised player's salary doesn't count against it) would make teams more competitive. The
difference between the top and next four in the East is way off, and the West really isn't much better.

Well, the upcoming lockout has to do with a lot of your complaints. I'd be willing to give up the first third of next season to make the league
more competitive. For all of its flaws, the NFL has succeeded in giving each team in the league a chance to win.

I strongly disagree with bringing a franchise tag to the NBA. While it allows teams to hold onto superstars, it also forces a player to play for one
team his whole career, which in my opinion is completely unfair (i.e. forcing someone to live in Cleveland for his whole career). I like when it gets
a little more top heavy, because the playoffs this season are going to be insane. I also think the NBA is super-watchable, because almost every team
has at least one guy worth watching. I think this season has been pretty exciting so far.

Some belated thoughts on All-Star Weekend -
I'm joining the "anti-prop" movement that has started in relation to the dunk contest. It's kinda ramped up more and more in recent
years (Howard with the cape, Howard bringing out the phone booth to change into the cape) but Griffin's choir/announcer/car combo was the apex.
I liked Demar Derozan's comments that he's done being in "prop dunk" contests and will only be in dunk contests from now on. Which
unfortunately means he probably won't be in next year's contest.
I also agree with putting a limit on the amount of attempts the contestants get. The crowd gets so bored and frustrated as a contestant tries over
and over again that when they finally get it, it's lost about 96% of its appeal. Deadspin.com has a really cool montage up right now of every
dunk in the contest, WITHOUT all the futile tries beforehand, and it's amazing how much better the dunks look seeing them like that.
Apparently there is a way to stop Kevin Durant - Put him in a three-point shooting contest.
Rihanna brought it for the halftime show at the All-Star game and has officially taken her place in my "Current Top 3 Hotties" list. I think, if
they were jonesing to put some current pop music in the halftime show at the Super Bowl, she would've been a better choice than the Black Eyed
Peas.
And apparently Kobe had a transplant before the game where they replaced his current ones with "Kobe circa 2000" legs.

I'd also like to mention how terrible the 'allowing second, third attempts etc.' on the dunks cheapens the whole deal. I've
been watching the NBA since I was a little kid (watching the Bulls spank the league for the majority of the 90's), and they just dunked. There
wasn't any bullshit cars, phone booths...
Wow, upon further reflection, I look like a ranting old man up there. Regardless, that's how I feel.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to talk about how great my Chicago Bulls are doing this year. Just beat Miami again, 3rd place in the
East... not too shabby.

Since my Bobcats just basically said "Screw this season, we're playing for the future!" by trading away Gerald Wallace, I'll definitely
pull for the Bulls over the Celts, Heat, or Knicks.

Chris Bosh's flop of the year.
Kevin Nash would be jealous... Bosh sold that non-hit like it was the Fingerpoke of Doom. And I don't use Twitter, but I read that "Bosh
Spice" is a trending topic today, which I have to admit is pretty funny.

I also don't think a franchise tag is necessary and don't get all this uproar about players "choosing where they play." Rick Reilly just
wrote a ridiculous article (as opposed to his regular hack articles) whining about Carmelo "forcing his way out" and that Howard and Paul are
holding their teams hostage.
All these guys are doing is not signing extensions. It's not like Howard and Paul are demanding trades. Why should they be expected to
automatically play their entire career in the same place? It's not their fault that the media stirs up a shitstorm every time someone comes
within 2 years of the end of their contract.

Seeing as Houston is my dark horse team, I'm bummed Battier got traded away. Hopefully, Thabeet can do something..ianything.
With Deron gone, is there any chance that Sloan will go back to Utah?
If I were Deron, I'd sign any extension the Nets give me. Sure, I'd probably not make the playoffs for 1 or 2 more years, but palling
around with the Russian billionaire and Jay-Z will definitely do shitloads for my lifestyle and social standing.
On a side note, anybody here play NBA Fantasy on Yahoo? We should definitely set up an OO-only league next year. 12-16 teams, 12 players per team.
