OOfficial Discussion Thread for: RAW (April 25, 2016)
Tonight on RAW: it looks like Shane McMahon is in control of things, again.... but it's very likely the last time before Vince/Steph/HHH
appear to remind him that this is temporary... still, they just threw the whole WM32 stipulation out the window and gave Shane a full month to give
RAW a makeover, and he's used that time to bring in/bring back a bunch of fresh talent... if tonight's his last night to do so, it's
worth keeping in mind that Finn Balor lost the NXT Title last Thursday night, and would be available for a call-up to the main roster... [also: Titus
O'Neil is free to return to TV tonight, and having Shane personally bring him back, while making light of the bullshit reasoning behind
Vince's decision to suspend him, might be kinda fun]
In fact, tonight's RAW is in Hartford, CT, whch is essentially WWE's "home town," so Vince/Steph/HHH could wasily start the process of
Corporate Dickery tonight...
But other than that, it's the final "icing on the cake" episode of RAW before a PPV... the last few weeks of TV have been really strong, so
hopefully we keep that momentum rolling towards Payback...
The WWE Title Match between Roman Reigns and #1 Contender AJ Styles doesn't necessarily have anyone convinced Roman's reign is in any
danger of ending... but the mere fact that Styles is getting the chance, and the way Reigns seems to have embraced a cockier and more heelish element
to his character, have still made this a very interesting little story, with a ton of different "outs" in terms of Roman leaving Payback with the
strap.... it won't necessarily just be him doing a babyface superman act and getting booed for it...
Some of those outs would involve an easy and logical expansion of hostilities, as AJ's old pals -- Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson -- recently
showed up and have attacked both Reigns and Reigns' cousins, the Usos.... the only match confirmed for tonight's show is the Usos vs.
Gallows/Anderson, so I once again remind you of the possibility of Factional Warfare heating up (and that with Balor in play, Seth Rollins nearing a
return, the League of Nations, the New Day, and Bray Wyatt's post-face-turn injury being not-so-serious, it's not necessarily just two
factions, and they may not align exactly as you'd guess)...
The #2 match on the Payback Depth Chart is Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho, and it's been an absolute delight to watch Jericho actually get built
up into a convincing and credible heel for the first time since 2010, while Ambrose has been so pitch perfect as the thorn in Jericho's side
that he's already fully erased the memory of what happened to him at WM32... the result is a nice little feud, where it'll actually mean
something when Ambrose scores the big win, and sends Jericho off on another hiatus...
Not too far behind is Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens, who bring their long-standing feud to the main roster, and ought to deliver the goods on Sunday... in
the meantime, their feud has been intertwined with Ambrose/Jericho, and it'd be totally fine with me if WWE did their usual thing of repeating a
SmackDown match on RAW, so the larger audience sees it... in this case, that could mean an Ambrose/Zayn vs. Jericho/Owens match... if not, expanding
it into a 6-man could get be an intriguing way to get AJ and Reigns into the same match, but without giving up the one-on-one...
Those top three matches already make Payback a must-see for me... the rest of the card, which will also need to be serviced by tonight's show:
Miz (with Maryse now acting as his hype woman, to great effect) will defend his IC Title against Cesaro.... Charlotte will defend her Women's
Title against Natalya, in a match where both Ric Flair and Bret Hart are at ringside; this recreates the exact scenario in which Charlotte and Nattie
had an epically eye-opening match at the first NXT Takeover event... and the finals of the Tag Title Tournament pit Enzo Amore/Colin Cassaday against
the Vaudevillains (with the New Day not scheduled on the card, presumably they'll have a comedy skit associated with this match, as the
tournament WAS "sponsored by Booty-O's")...
In terms of adding an extra match, or a pre-show match, we've also got these on-going storylines to pick from: Ryback just beat US Champ Kalisto
in a non-title match on last Thursday's SD, so, uhhhhhhhh, let's all mentally rewind to where we were 4 weeks ago, and pretend that WM32
match in front of a 2/3rds empty stadium never happened.... Baron Corbin has destroyed Dolph Ziggler on multiple occasions, so that's definitely
A Thing.... Wyatts vs. League of Nations was clearly intended to be part of Payback, and might still be salvaged with Bray in a non-wrestling role;
alternatively, you could do New Day vs. LoN as a throwaway crowdpleaser... and the Quest for the Golden Truth took some wacky turns the past two
weeks, and is now a freaky three-way in which both Truth and Fandango are vying for Goldust's affections...
That is all. End communication....
The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Don't wait till after 11pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome.
So discuss, debate, and rate!

I can't really think of a time when we got several factions outright going at it (maybe before the Invasion when it looked like ECW was going
come in as a third party), but that'd be pretty cool.... not something I'd rush for this PPV; but if done right it could be a way to give
a whole PPV an extra spin with a bit more gravitas to it.
So maybe...
Reigns + Usos... Samoan Swat Team 2k16... The Tribe.... Napman and his Zzzz's
Vs.
Balor Club
vs
New Day
vs
League of Nations (is this still a thing?)

Could the Secret Society Of Super Samoans include The Vaudevillains, just to get some extra villainy up in there?

I was just thinking the same thing. Like, is that going to be what all the faces say to rebut those claims? "Really? Your shining star seems to be
a sinking ship!", and we're supposed to cheer the ruin of a whole pseudo-country? That's just plain mean-girl face behavior.
