Part of me feels like they should have pushed his turn back to Survivor Series or something to make the program pop a bit more.

Which might have been the original plan all along. The whole thing got hotshotted by Finn Balor getting hurt at Summerslam and having to vacate the title right away. Survivor Series could've been a four way with Balor, Owens, Reigns and Rollins and done the same finish they did on Raw. Unfortunately, pulling the trigger early has lead to Seth treading water waiting for HHH to be back for the Road to Wrestlemania.

Just gave Takeover a look-see... I didn't think the show as a whole had anywhere near the sizzle of Dallas and Brooklyn heading in, and it also didn't turn into a sneaky great show thanks to in-ring work (like Toronto did).

But it was still a damned fine way to spend 2 hours (and a testament to the shorter format always working out great; I sincerely believe all single-brand PPVs should aim for 2 hours, and have a 30 minute over-run buffer available, but no more than that)...

To my surprise, I perked up sooner than I expected; the first two matches were essentially adequate, but AoP and DiY really stepped it up in the tag title match. Great break-out performance by the big lugs, including a genuinely awestruck "HO LEE SHIT" chant after that Flash Super Collider. Also: I want Ellering to start carrying the "Book of Pain" to ringside, and go full 80s heel manager with it (e.g. Heyman's phone, Blassie's cane, etc), complete with speculation that it's loaded with some kind of space age titanium alloy that makes it a highly dangerous blunt force object.

Women's Title match also exceeded my expectations, just by virtue of how well-conceived and -executed it was on the psychology/story side. I fully expected Peyton and Billie to implode with Generic Female Jealousy, to facilitate what would basically be an easy Asuka Squash over Nikki.... nope, Peyton and Billie held it together, and were very compelling possible winners after they eliminated Nikki from the match and came close to taking down the champ. The closing camera shot of yet another instance of Meaningful Eye Contact between Asuka and Nikki also inspires confidence that those two are headed to an outstanding one-on-one at Takeover during WM Weekend.

FWIW, I'll pile on with the Nikki Cross fandom. On top of all the reasons already supplied, I can't help but notice that she seems to have a lot of Molly Holly in her. Not in terms of presentation or personality, obviously, but in more entirely physically superficial terms in which Peak Molly and Present Nikki could probably share ring gear and have it fit both of them perfectly. And of this, I cannot help but approve.

Main event was supposed to be great. And it was. Didn't think the fans (or myself) would so easily bite on Shinsuke losing the title again so quickly, but man alive, the pieces really are just falling into place for Roode. He's been the poster boy for "big fish, little pond" pretty much his entire career, but I can't see that still being the case a year from now.

Lost in the hullabaloo: Graves is done with NXT, and the new color commentator is Nigel McGuiness, effective Wednesday night. This is outstanding news. The two-night UK tournament was an entertaining affair, and Nigel's work was a huge part of that. He takes the sincere and earnest approach that Daniel Bryan did (during the CWC) to really analyze and explain everything as if wrestling was a real fight, but adds in a more compelling delivery and professorial tone. Very Regal-esque.

Why wouldn't those to Australian girls, if they truly didn't care which one won, attempt to pin each other and snake the title that way? I think it would have made for a great story if they tried it right at the beginning of the match, and had it broken up by Asuka/Cross, with the realization of both women that they cannot afford to leave these two alone in the ring, or risk losing the title due to them pinning each other.

It would have made for a more enticing spot after they put Cross through the table and they ran to the ring in an attempt to pin one or the other before Asuka woke up.

Other than that, I thought it was a solid event, however this is the first NXT event where I think you can see the talent raids to the main rosters are starting to take an affect. It is a forgone conclusion that Samoa Joe is heading up (probably in a few hours), and Nakamura seems like he will be the one after that, so where does Roode go as Champion once Nakamura is gone? I think the talent towards the top of the card has been thinned and I hope they can shore it up once that happens.

Really good show, with some notes...

-Strong vs. Other Guy was awesome and I liked it very, very much. Strong fits right in with NXT and I can't wait for him to be criminally underused on the main roster.

-The tag team match was great, but not because of those two hosses in the ring. Gargano and Ciampa kicked ass in this match and really walked those two lumbering buffoons to a good match.

Onto the buffoons. Where to begin?

First, I'd like to say these two, as a team, aren't lighting things up and probably won't any time soon.

Second, their individual names suck. Razar reminds me of that TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze baddie, and Akam? Come on, now. These names are awful/

Third, Razar is not very good and Akam is very NOT good, so Razar is the only redeeming part of the team so far.

-The woman's match was good. Liked how Asuke won so cleanly.

-Main event was great. Roode had a great heel moment and Nakamura can take a rest.

NXT is looking good with Strong right now. He needs to get in the main event scene and have some good matches with Roode, and quick.

Could not agree more with you on all this.

Although every time I hear Akam, it makes me think of Jay Sherman sneezing.

So replacing all the old title belts with new belts is because one of the old ones is a tad bit more biohazard-y than the others, yes?

Cien Almas is REALLY starting to grow on me. For as much as a weird start as he got, I think he might have some pretty goof prospects on the main roster one day. I feel bad for not following NXT as closely as I used to oer the past 8 months or so. A lot of different faces and voices, and aside from still not being completely sold on Sanity, I think things look a lot more promising than a lot of the other doom and gloomers out there might have me believe.

Oh, and Tommy. Fucking. End. Aleister. Frigging. Black. Goddamn.

Edit: Tokka and Rahzar REALLY ought to keep their masks on.

I'm not sure on that entrance but Black's definitely got an interesting look about him, though as theatrically cool as that Black Mass is, it might need a bit more oomph.

Oh and Nigel claiming he has "a bright future here in Ring of Honor" and the uncomfortable silence afterwards was great.

Edit: and now AoP are "the nxt champions" is weed legal in Florida?

This is a fucking amazing tag match.

Edit: Not at ALL happy with the way that match turned out, but in the best way possible. As much as I like to shit on big beefy prospects like AoP, they were able to keep up with two world class teams tonight so good on them. \

Those sequences with DIY and The Revival teaming up and swapping parters for finishers, using their smarts to bring the big lugs down. Just a lot of great little moments like that that make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. Moments that quite frankly are too few and far between on the main roster shows.

Not sure if DIY is still earmarked for the Cruiser division, or if thats been quietly swept under the rug. I honestly hope they end up with The Revival on Smackdown. Yeah, I know. What a hot take.

Correct.

Also, they sure did linger on the new non-DNA tainted lady title for quite a bit. Like lingering on a money shot. Ironic, innit?

If it weren't for the Reddit pervs who cross-reference pictures of moles to confirm or deny the legitimacy of nudie pics QUICKLY pointing out that Paige's baby batter belt had the old scratch logo on it. It was replaced with the now freshly retired Women's belt that incorporated the modern Network logo, after Paige relinquished the scratch logo belt after winning the Diva's title.

God only knows what may have happened with that Lisa Frank monstrosity in Paige's possession.

On a non-jizz/title belt related note, has anyone been having issues with the WWE Network tonight? The main event has been almost unwatchable for me due to how much it keeps freezing (and I've tried it on my PS3 and Fire Stick).

Doing fine on my MacBook via Safari and Charter Spectrum here in the SoCal Desert. In fact I was actually surprised with the hiccup free performance during tonights show after some pretty abysmal performances issues I experienced during the Rumble and Elimination Chamber. Didn't even experience any tiling.

The one thing I do know about Shinski Whackamola is that his violin theme is pretty damn sweet, and I would be okay with hearing it on a weekly basis. I have nothing more to say that is either relevant or true.

Thanks for the WWE Network feedback, guess it was just on my end then...hopefully the same shit doesn't happen during Mania tomorrow!

On a NXT note: I may be in the minority here, but I'm kind of getting tired of the "guy (or girl) jobs out before going to RAW/Smackdown" deal. And I know that "doing the honors" on your way out is a longtime tradition in wrestling, but it's just kind of getting predictable and repetitive in NXT, as we've seen Balor, Joe, Bayley, and now Nakamura all do it. In four months, we'll probably see Roode failing to recapture the NXT title from McIntyre before debuting on RAW. I dunno, I guess I feel like they need to start coming up with new ways to get the top guys onto RAW/Smackdown other than "they failed to recapture the NXT title, so now they're on the main roster."

Though speaking of the NXT title, I'm definitely digging the new belt.

Ever since the NXT title began, it's always been a case of lose it, lose rematch, move up. They varied it a bit the past few years by having Owens debut before losing it, and Joe/Nakamura trading the belt... maybe it's time for Drew to not even win the title, just do a few months in NXT then move back up.

The Superplex from the top rope to the outsid ein that tag match was a batshit bananas visual.

The Women's match was terrific and I like my Asuka with a little bit of shade, so her winning the match the way she did was perfect, and probably the start of her "desperate" time as champion.

The title match was probably the best those two can do, and that sounds like a negative, but I really, really enjoyed it. I thought it told a great story and Nakamura took those Glorious DDT's like he wanted to be Droz, in the future.

The Super Glorious DDT was, well...super.

Great night of action all around. I agree with Rick that these Brand Specific PPVs (NXT, Smackdown, RAW) should be 2 to 2 1/2 hours with the cross branded PPVs being 3-4. I tink it would brand itself better, but then again, so would a shorter RAW program week-to-week and that isn't happening anytime soon, either.

Sanity's kind of a guilty pleasure for me, especially Nikki Cross and Killian Dane (or "Big Scottish Grease", as my wife calls him). Roderick Strong looked really good as a hot tag, get him a permanent tag partner. Ruby Riot took a dumb but spectacular back bump and has a great look, at least.

Just an okay debut for Aleister Black. His finisher seemed kind of eh. His entrance is great, though, and he'll clearly benefit from some polish and time in NXT. Almas more than carried his end and seems to be getting better in his heel character.

Lots of love for the tag match. I may not love Authors of Pain, but -that- is how you put over a team as a monster. I was marking out like crazy for all the double and quadruple teaming from DIY and Revival. I understand some bitching about DIY going out first as babyfaces, but, honestly, the crowd sounded plenty into Revival, too and probably would've popped for them like babyfaces if they'd managed to win.

The women's match was great and culminating in an Asuka heel turn was the right booking. This was a good match, but it'll be so much better and have so much more heat with an actual issue and hatred built into it. Asuka seems like she'll be excellent as the arrogant, untouchable heel.

Roode/Nakamura just don't have super-chemistry to get to that next level together, but this was still a really good match and it did what it had to do to establish Bobby as champ and send Shinsuke onto better things.

And, of course, the return of one of my favorite wrestlers in the world, Drew McIntyre, which only leads to one question: will Drew Mcintyre's AWESOME SOLO MUSIC also return?
