YOU MISSED PUNK'S RETURN?!?!

ETA: Owens/A.J. was great and I get the ending in the context of their program, but it ended leaving the crowd grumbling which I don't think is planting the good seed vibe for the main event. Christ it's gonna sound like Reigns is there.

The best one I've found so far is en espanol.

AYE NO ME GUSTA!

But Becky's hair was kinda funky. It's like she dropped the "steam" part and just went full "punk".

You guys and your silly little wrestling bubble. Nakamura went on first at 8 PM because the Lebron's were starting at 8:30 and it's all about that 18 to 35 male demographic.

Are you telling me the 18 to 35 male demographic doesn't appreciate a good ol' fashioned HOSSFEST? This country's done, man.

Oh dear Lord Jesus, this ain't happening, man...This can't be happening, man! This isn't happening!

1) Yeah, the Spanish ones are great, it's the English ones that are fucked. Oh well, Presentado por goya!

2) Beck's hair was perfect. Many 1980's fantasies returned when I saw what she'd done, from the background wasteland babes in Road Warrior to Billy Idol videos to a very interesting, ahem, adult film series called New Wave Hookers. Keep it up, Becky, and I will too.

If the analysts (Kenny Smith & Charles Barkley) are threatening to play board-games instead of watch a one-sided beatdown (which, amazingly the game hasn't turned into), I don't think the WWEUniverse would've been planning their evenings around it either.

Plus, the Warriors are 'Merica's team these days, cuz Everybody Hates BronBron.

ETPlus: the 18-35ers are used to watching multiple things on multiple devices at the same time, right? Like netflixing and youtubing and snapchatting all at the same time? And doing all three of those things while they play LoL or whatever moba they're addicted to?

The crowd was trying to care, with the smarks pretending to cheer for Jinder, and counting on the kiddies and moms to cheer for Orton.

At the 10 minute mark, the "dueling" cheers stopped dueling. Now, it is "LETS GO JIN DER" vs. "SEE EM PUNK."

Good luck with that, WWE....

At least they're selling ZOMG ARM PSYCHOLOGY!!1!1 TBH, this isn't horrible, it's just Jinder vs. Orton.

ETA: Aaaaaand his arm is now healed enough to do the mat slap.

ETA2: Well, points for doing something different. Dom, you can now go pick up your dick you ripped off and threw across the room and sew 'er back on.

Get with the sportsball, man! It's not a blowout!

P.S. The Twin Peaks theme is possibly my favorite piece of music ever. I just can't handle all the weirdness of the plot. It messes with my mind, man. *talks backwards like that little guy from the show*

eta: Holy shit Orton just dropped that little guy on his head.

double eta: JINDERMANIA IS RUNNING WILD, BROTHER!!!!!!!!

Sooo... Is that a record for fastest jump from "irrelevant" to "champion"?

Fuck, it hurts so bad to be right.

And I'd really like to know the mindset of the WWE here...Jinder was originally a midcarder who eventually got released. He's brought back a couple of years later and serves as a jobber for six months (including losing to Finn Balor in two minutes the week before he got shipped to Smackdown). And then he becomes WWE champion. What did they see in him in the past month that they didn't in the past five years? I guess it's just trying to build a star for the Indian market?

Also, glad to see that the WWE title has gone from AJ to Cena to Wyatt to Orton to Mahal in four months.

Missed the chinlock mania (sorry Jinder, it's not your fault). As per Mansfield I opted for another bath instead.

Non-silver lining: 14-time world champion Randy Orton when he inevitably wins the belt back.

To answer the bolded question succinctly: A-yup.

To answer it longly: I guess Vince realized they have a lot of "middle class" people with money to burn on merch, and it's a market worth tapping & milking. But I still don't think Jinder is really "the key" to India. It might work better long-term if they got an actual person from that country with whom the Indian fans can connect, instead of some Canadian guy who speaks the language and portrays a stereotypical "heel" while spouting indian cliches like "maharaja", as opposed to "I am proud of my Indian Heritage, and am going to defend it in the face of adversity".

Speaking of crazy outcomes: Holy shit, the Celtics won a game in Bron's Barn.

Hilariously, TNA might be to blame. With the more conscutive tours to India and the fact Impact beats them in Indian channels made them worried TNA could cut a good piece out of that pie in the long run if they didn't focus more on that market.

Odd thing to compete with TNA over, considering TNA can barely run a show in the US, in an amusement park where they're probably getting one hell of a discount on the building they use.

Oddly enough, "Indian TV streams" is where I catch Impact, when I manage to catch it. And, like, not only do they have the weekly live program, they have a ton of "Best of Impact/Best of [Insert Superstar Here]" shows, pretty much every single day of the week. Sony Six (the channel-stream in question) is like the TNA Network, at least when they don't have cricket going on.

WWE is on a different network, and nowhere near as much saturation as far as I can tell.

Jinder winning feels a bit like JBL's first title win all those back where (and JBL was probably more over at least in tag matches) the WWE might be committing to putting the title on the guy first, then getting him over after the fact as JBL kind of dbuted a new gimmick right before winning the title and came off the scrap heap for the most part benefitting from SD's need to make new stars.

Could it be that Orton was just stale as shit and everything he's done with Wyatt was awful and they just wanted something to provide a spike and create some buzz? I think that's a strong possibility.

Why am I on the hot seat?

Look: in SOME ways, this is Jinder reliving the JBL Trajectory, circa 2004.

The big difference is that in 2004, WWE was really desperate, and JBL wasn't a good choice, but he was A CHOICE. Eddie couldn't keep on going with the title, the brand split and backstage makeover (this was the very earliest days of Steph taking over "creative" and Johnny Ace replacing Jim Ross for developmental, so there wasn't a well of talent to plunder) didn't leave a whole lot of options, so somebody said "Let's take JBL's random heel turn and pretend it's a total reboot and nobody will remember that he's a tag team/jobber guy")...

That lack of options does not exist here in 2017, so the 'splaination is that WWE is willing to shoot itself in the foot in order to "get" the entire collection of fans who "knew" Jinder couldn't be WWE Champ. To quote James Ellsworth, DUH.

Great, WWE, you got a moment of shock out of some of your more jaded fans. But you're the one with a bloody stump of a foot.

Also: I increasingly think WWE has planted audience members for all those "random" (and obnoxious) audience cut-aways. They tend to go to a small handful of attractive-and-over-reacting people 4-5 times per show, which is very suspicious. And that's why they were able to create the false narrative that Jinder's win was somehow the same thing as Brock beating Taker.... I know *I* was not jaw-dropped, or confused when Jinder got the win. I was just rolling my eyes and sighing.

I think most fans were on that same page. That WWE would do this was in the back of our brains (as per goons prediction), but "There's this stupid thing WWE could do, but I don't think they'll actually do it" is MUCH different from "There's no way this thing could happen." Jinder beating Orton was very much the former, not the latter.

I guess the "upside" to all this is that JBL turned out OK in the end. Granted, he sucked for months and months, and killed ratings and sucked the fun out of the room for most of his first reign, but by sheer brute force of WWE's throat-forcery, he had long enough to allow his credibility and gravitas to catch up to his push.

To circle back around to my original point: unlike 2004, WWE didn't "need" Mahal to win tonight because they simply had no better options. This is the deepest roster in the history of the company, and to randomly reach down and tell the fans this career scrubberoonie is the new WWE Champion, instead of taking somebody the fans are already invested in and putting them in that slot, is sheer silliness.

Mahal isn't bad; he's just unnecessary. I don't have any desire to cheer against Mahal; I just have no desire to see him in a featured role at this moment in time.

Sometimes, I wonder if WWE realizes that these are two different coins, instead of two sides of the same coin....

I'm happy Jinder won the title. He's definitely put in the work outside the ring. He's not great shakes in the ring still, but when has that ever been a barometer for being champion? Brock Lesnar is the Raw champ for christ sake.

Also, Jinder being champ completely opens up the title picture. SD actually feels like the 'land of opportunity' when someone outside the 3 man title shot pipeline breaks through. It's not even like he'll be that bad a champ, at least he'll be on tv and giving effort. Unlike other champions.

Don't hinder Jinder.

I think my one argument against Rick's very-well-laid-out scenario above would be that Guerrero was fucking molten hot when they switched over to JBL, which nobody wanted to see, whereas Orton is just a big cup of "meh" and there were quite a few cheers for Mahal with him losing tonight.
