PPV DISCUSSION: WWE presents TLC Emergency Do-Over Edition 2017
Just 48 hours ago, TLC was shaping up as a one trick pony, where that one trick was the admittedly exciting Reunion of the Shield.
Now, with just hours to go before the show, that reunion is not happening, but TLC has been upgraded to a TWO Trick Pony, thanks to some utterly
unexpected Stunt Booking. It's the craziest damn thing since that one time with the liver enzymes took out half the roster, and I gotta say,
WWE's panicked recovery is a lot more enticing this time around.
Kurt Angle -- who had been spreading plenty of disinfo the past months about "I'll get back in the ring eventually, but I haven't even
done the physical or testing or anything yet" -- is donning the singlet for the first time in over a decade for a WWE PPV match, as he replaces Roman
Reigns in a 3-on-5 handicap match main event. With Miz as the leader of the other team, it makes ample storyline sense, but I still don't expect
Kurt to go all out in a match that got little to no advance hype... a semi-bait-and-switch with Jason Jordan could be ont he table, and until the
revelation of Kane as Miz's Mystery Partner, a lot of talk centered on Samoa Joe (healed up after an injury) also getting involved in this match
somehow.
And with Bray Wyatt also on the shelf, RAW has gone out and borrowed AJ Styles for tonight, and he'll face Finn Balor in an Indy Darling Dream
Match For the Ages. No backstory, no real stakes, but I'm already a billion times more stoked for this than I was for Bray Wyatt cosplaying as
his dead sister.
Should end up being a solid night of entertainment. Which is something The Me sure could use after two consecutive nights of ALCS Scrotal Kicks.
Here's the full card:
Angle/Ambrose/Rollins vs. Miz/Strowman/Cesaro/Sheamus/Kane (TLC Match)
AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor
Alexa Bliss vs. Mickie James (Women's Title)
Kalisto vs. Enzo Amore (Cruiserweight Title)
Asuka vs. Emma
Cedric Alexander/Rich Swann vs. Brian Kendrick/Jack Gallagher
Sasha Banks vs. Alicia Fox (Pre-show Match)
The pre-show could also be used to set up an additional match (something with Elias/Anderson/Gallows vs. Matt/Titus/Apollo would be easy enough to
do), and let's just say a TLC PPV with only one TLC Match would be a bit odd.... so distributing a Ladder Match and a Tables Match among those
undercard contests is something I'd look for, too.
That is all. End communication....

Naturally, the first WWE PPV in a while that I'm really interested in and I have to work an overnight shift at work tonight, so I won't be
catching TLC until tomorrow.
But for the hell of it, my picks:
Angle/Rollins/Ambrose vs Miz/Strowman/Kane/Sheamus/Cesaro: The TLC stipulation lends itself to all kinds of shenanigans, but you kind of have
to figure that Angle isn't losing his first WWE match in ten years, so I'll go with the faces to win. On a sidenote, after their
WrestleMania X-8 match 15 years ago, who the hell ever thought you'd see Angle and Kane in the same match in 2017?
AJ Styles vs Finn Balor: Either guy can eat the loss here without it hurting them very much, but since this is a RAW PPV, I'll go with
Balor to get the clean victory after a hard-fought back and forth match.
Alexa Bliss vs Mickey James: I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility for Mickie to get the title here, and it would
make for a nice story, but I don't quite see the WWE taking the belt off of Alexa just yet, so I'm going with her.
Kalisto vs Enzo: The cruiserweight title has been hot-shotted around so much since it's inception that it's hard to say who wins
here. But given how much TV time Enzo has been getting since joining the cruiserweight division, I'll pick him to regain the belt tonight.
Asuka vs Emma: I think there's a 5% chance WWE does a shocking swerve and somehow has Emma beat Asuka in her main roster debut. But this
should really be Asuka destroying Emma in 20 seconds, so I hope they go that route with it. I'm picking Asuka.
Cedric Alexander/Rich Swann vs Brian Kendrick/Jack Gallagher: I have zero idea what the storyline is going into this match, but I guess
I'll go with the heels to win.

Look, I'll just say it. Renee interviewing Dean on the preshow weirds me out, maaaan. They, like, screw and stuff. And on WWE programming no
less! Her not saying, "Good luck tonight babe, eh?" is just odd.

Digging the competitiveness of the Emma/Asuka match; it elevates Emma even if she loses so she can do other stuff down the line, and allows you to
showcase Asuka for those who haven't watched her in NXT (Myself included). I had thought maybe they might do an upset, but I think you just do
the happy ending right out of the gate instead of being "shocking".
Agree; Balor has the home show so having him go over makes sense... unless you are going to remove Angle from the GM role; in which case you could
then have a heel GM say that Balor embarrassed Raw and use that to give him something better to do than Wyatt in drag (honestly at this point
I'd maybe hold Wyatt off TV when he's healthy and give him a bit of a reset).
I like Alexa but I'd give the happy ending to Mickie (er... phrasing)... Asuka is kind of a division reset, so a little anarchy for a bit would
help that instead of someone just coming in strong and ploughing their way into Bliss (goddam it...). If James wins and then maybe loses the title to
someone else that would let Bliss regain the title and be bigger while Asuka works her way up the ladder.
Not quite sure what to expect out of the big tag match... I think if I was booking it I'd maybe have Kurt get "hurt" during the match, which
could let Jordan come in and brawl one of the opposing guys out of the match... This could set up a story of does Kurt still have what it takes, and
maybe even Jordan questioning it as well so that they can have business down the line (maybe earlier in the card you could do a backstage where Jordan
tries to tell him to not go ahead with the match). Long term for Kurt this could let you do something where he's going to prove he still has it
by recapturing the WWE/Universal title.
Don't care about he rest of the card... well, Enzo wins, because I think the WWE hates Williamssl.
ETA: Missed the pre-show... I guess Jordan and Angle started to have some kind of conversation? Also looks like Jordan is going to be busy with
Elias... maybe Joe gets involved somehow... takes out Angle?

Gallagher wrestling in dapper suit attire is somehow worse than him wrestling in his technicolor underwear. Premium cruiser match though. So far so
good tonight.
ETA: Not a dud of a match yet. Weird post-match Micke promo. This PPV is really Crash TV heavy. Fucking Elias better get hazard pay for whatever it
is they're asking him to do.

For what amounts to watching the mid cards Wrestlemania, this has been a pleasantly solid show. The women have stepped up tonight, especially
Emma.
Jason Jordan Thrower of Vegtables is an interesting development.
Hey look! Enzo! Yet ... time to pause for zombies. We shall resume after I review whatever awful decision Rick (THE RICK not the Rick) makes tonight
putting his family in mortal zombie peril.

Enzo's the champ again. I'll be That Guy, and admit that I don't hate it.
I was actually a bit taken aback when he lost it, but I recognize that WWE had to do something to cover for the whole Neville situation that night.
Now, I can go back to my theory that WWE needs to go all in on Enzo completely "ruining" cruiserweight wrestling. All the way down to him demanding
that 205 is now called "ZO5."
As a bonus, the angle they ran last Monday (with several of the cruiser heels running out to help Enzo) could be used to give his title reign legs.
Enzo just needs one or two tweeks, and he could be an even better latter-day "Million Dollar Man" than Alberto del Rio was.... I mean, a truly
despicable and in your face rich douchebag for the ages!
Other fun easter egg: looks like Kurt will be dressing up as a member of the Shield tonight, as Ambrose and Rollins gifted him some SWAT gear in
backstage skit. I had sort of wondered if that was something they would do. It certainly leaves them to do Kurt's "real" return match as its
own thing, somewhere down the line.
And now.... Indy Wanker Dream Match Time!
Rick
EDIT TO ADD: Balor in Full Demon Mode. So yeah, on top of the obvious "home brand" reasons, he's totally winning, now. Still it ought not to
suck!

Great match thus far; man Balor is looking just brutal out there in his assaults... not saying this is a heel turn, but I could now see how the guy
could probably be an effective heel.
ETA: Not awesome? The WWE feed right now... has cut out on me twice in this match, and very lagging at other times... least for me.
ETA: I hope Styles comes out on SD and cuts a promo thanking Balor for the match, but saying he wants another shot, this time on his turf. They could
then have them face off at Clash of Champions next month... or maybe hold off until they can bump into one another at Survivor Series and have a
backstage segment where Styles challenges Balor to come to the SD PPV.

However it plays out, I like this general notion. They actually did play it up during the match (calling it a preview of one of the only times RAW
goes head-to-head with SD at Survivor Series), and for as much as we're gonna have to deal with Jinder Mahal being treated as an actual rival to
Brock Lesnar, there ARE way better options for SD vs. RAW.
Styles and Balor anchoring that option is a great idea. Imagine the 5-on-5 you could do, starting with Styles making the challenge, and then Balor
says "Yup," and bring Gallows and Anderson out as his first two partners.... AJ does a deal with the devil, and adds Owens and Zayn... the other 4
men almost don't matter. Almost.

that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but

That was a premium Elseworlds PPV. It moved the needle on most storylines but otherwise it didn't matter overall because every match was pretty
damn good. Even the Jersey Devil's match was above tolerable.

That main event was just glorious chaos. Non-stop action, crazy brawling, weird stunts. Booker T suddenly embracing the hate to shit-talk Angle
through the whole match was strange but entertaining.
Yeah, this was...a pretty damn good PPV. Like, every match was pretty good at least. Elias/Jordan was probably the weakest, but the show-wide angle
that set it up was pretty fun.

My feed was getting really bad, so I had to call it quits for a bit and come back to finish the show off...
*I never cease to be impressed by how good the WWE is at putting those pre-match videos together; knowing how fast this whole Angle subbing in thing
came to pass just shows how fast they are as well.
*Man, look at the ring bounce with all of the heels in there... that's a lot of weight.
*Okay that Shield entrance with Kurt fully decked out was awesome; the guy just looked like he was having so much fun there... expected a
bigger/longer pop, but as I'm watching the crowd is supper into this.
*It is still surreal to see Kurt Angle and Kane in a ring in 2017! Kane is 50, and has been wrestling since 1992, Angle is 48 and has been wrestling
(Pro) since 1998... by comparison pretty much every other person in that match would have literally grown up watching those two.
*The double ladder-table spot was really cool; glad Angle didn't make it a triple; him cheerleading at the bottom was awesome enough... like I
said the guy just looks like he's having a ball out there whenever he isn't selling. Hope the other two Shield members are okay.
*If Angle wasn't probably already wrestling only a few matches before he retires I'd love to see sappy Kurt keep trying to insert himself
into the Shield a la way he kept trying to impress Taker with the scooter, or Austin/McMahon with the badges and hats... just the t-shirts alone could
be gold.
*Kane looked really sad there when he came back before Angle locked him in the ankle lock... like a sad Keanu gif waiting to happen.
*God I love Strowman... to his credit he almost looked he he broke the table for Angle with just his massive arms as he cradled Angle in them.
*Not sure how the Shield comes back from this... five on two with the faces getting their asses beat is pretty insurmountable... do we get someone
running in? Love Miz waving and lipping off at Angle as he's being carried out.
*At this point if even Roman made the save I think the roof would blow off the place in cheers.
*Kane almost looks Vader at the end of Jedi conflicted... Never mind... but his wig is slipping off! Honestly, and I love Kane, but I don't
think you needed him out there; Braun has been sold as pretty destructive on his own, The Bar is pretty tough as well... just felt like overkill, and
sometimes even in the way. Oh well, awesome match, and it is nice to see Kane back for a very, very very limited run hopefully.
*Man, Ambrose and Rollins just make you believe they can win... love the weasel act by Miz.... just a great heel; the guy could have a career that
spans decades as be it as a manager, or heel authority figure he'd be gold.
*That's why Kane is there! That image of Braun's hand kind of weakly grasping at Kane's foot was a nice shot... I guess it's
been like 10 years since Cena did the big chair drop bit on Barrett, so fair game? Wonder how they did that though; when Barrett did it he had cover,
but Braun was covered by the chairs... can't see them letting those drop on him as too much could go wrong.
*Braun must be like the weird test tube baby of a T-rex, and a circle jerk between Hogan, Taker, Kane, and any other wrestler that no sells... Dude is
awesome, and just unstoppable... him losing to Lesnar still seems like such a bad idea to me.
*Did Cesaro get his teeth fixed or not? Like is he just selling the injury still? He's another one that's awesome.
*There's the Kurt we love! A little slower, but just as great as ever...
*That was not a smooth fall from the ring... I think most of his weight was in the ropes so he should be okay, but not smooth...
*3 on 1! God that was an awesome finish, to just the match of the year. Again, Angle just looks like a kid on Christmas morning out there at the
end.
I'm curious what they would have done had Reigns been there; I mean you could probably imagine most of the match going the same way, but I
don't think Roman would have taken a powder like Angle did.
Is it a bit sad that the WWE delivers one of their best PPV's in a long time from top to bottom almost by accident, or rather by virtue of them
not going with their plans.
