OOfficial Discussion Thread for: RAW (February 8, 2016)
Tonight on RAW: Daniel Bryan will be on hand to talk retirement, and pretty much the rest of the show can go screw...
My sense is that there are roughly equal amounts of intrigue and sadness out there, all because of the peculiar way we've reached this point....
Bryan has been cleared by outside doctors for the past 6 months, and only WWE's doctors/trainers have held him back; additionally, Bryan has
publicly stated that he does not want a different/non-wrestling job within WWE, and that if they won't let him wrestle, he will simply leave the
company and go work elsewhere...
Ergo, a simple "Hey, everybody, if I wrestle again, I might die, so as of tonight, I'm retired" will only happen if something has changed to
Bryan's existing mindset... which leads to intrigue over those details, and sadness if we must resign ourselves to this truly being the end of
his in-ring career...
Of course, an alternate source of intrigue comes from people who just refuse to take anything at face value, and who assume that WWE is always lying
to us (also, the whole thing is strangely Marshawn-Lynch-y).... in which case this is all a swerve to set up a WM feud for Bryan, or at the very
least, a chance for Bryan to "shoot" by saying WWE doctors are keeping him out of the ring, but once he's out there, he'll see us all
again some day.... let me just say, the former is infinitely more probable than the latter, but in both cases, you're getting your hopes up
based entirely on the notion that a man who has only been able to wrestle about a dozen matches in the past 22 months is somehow 100% totally healthy
and durable...
We'll all just have to sit back and see how it goes, but either way, Bryan's presence and his announcement seem sure to overshadow just
about anything else WWE has in store tonight...
The lack of anything big and WrestleMania-worthy is worrisome, but the short term focus on Fastlane seems to be going well enough, with last
Monday's show being a big time "win" for Dean Ambrose and his credibility fitting into the WWE Title scene.... a secondary vibe of tension
between Reigns and Ambrose has been downplayed so far, but with Brock Lesnar on hand again tonight, there are ways to keep things interesting.... if
Brock keeps targeting Ambrose, and Reigns keeps doing nothing, it sets up the idea that Reigns is happy to sacrifice his "brother" to make his job
of winning at Fastlane incrementally easier.... but if Ambrose stirs the pot, and stands by as Lesnar goes after Reigns tonight (in retaliation for
Reigns doing nothing to help Ambrose last week), then things might break the other way...
You've also got Jericho/Styles starting to simmer... Ziggler/Owens seems to be getting reheated, too, although I don't know to what
end.... Kalisto owes ADR a US Title rematch (and things could get interesting if Kalisto retains, because Sin Cara returned from shoulder injury on
this weekend's house shows)... Charlotte and the women's title are under siege, with Becky/Sasha/Brie all holding some degree of a claim
to a title shot; seems like Charlotte might try to manipulate them into settling it among them, or just get stuck in a multi-way at the end of the
day.... the New Day vs. the Usos still seems to be the plan for WM (given the way the Rock worded things two weeks ago), but that leaves both teams
with time to spare between now and then..... and Big Show has taken the lead against the Wyatt Family, specifically trying to out-giant Strowman, but
everything with the Wyatts has to be viewed as water treading until Brock gets around to kicking their asses (or until WWE convinces us that they have
a better plan for Brock at WM); for the time being, Ryback (with a new look) got in on the Wyatt action last Thursday, too, so the sides are being
drawn up for the inevitable Andre Battle Royale drama centered on Show and Strowman....
That is all. End communication.
The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Don't wait till after 11pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome.
So discuss, debate, and rate!

If there's anyone this Bryan stuff benefits, I hope Miz and A.J. get caught up in it. Miz can really elevate his heel game shittalking his
former "protege" Bryan, and holy schnikes the explosion when A.J. comes out to shut him up.

On the Triple Threat Front tonight (sorry, a Bryan-less diversion is needed), I'd almost rather see them heat up Reigns-Ambrose tonight, and if
possible, the theme of the show is Brock getting revenge on the Wyatts. With him off next week, it's pretty much the last chance (unless
they're just going to completely ignore this storyline going forward) for them to wipe away that storyline if they want to push Brock (and
Ambrose) into the WWE Title match at Mania in some way.
If not...Perfectly Suitable Plan A (c) remains.

Considering the rumors this past weekend, maybe a Sin Cara heel turn is in the cards and a Demographic Focused Wrestlemania Tag Feud will occur
between the bigger ADR/Cara vs. Kalisto and a returning Rey Mysterio? Even if it's a 4-way for the US Title...that match would be quite
great.
Anyway...hoping Daniel Bryan gets the full Edge treatment tonight. With it not being a secret, they should be sprinkling this all throughout the show
to keep the fans focused on the good and not the sad.

I hate to think this, but we should thank Daniel for retiring tonight... Otherwise, I suspect we were gonna get a Main Event Contract Signing.

That was a great opening segment and reaffirms my opinion that Lesnar/Reigns/Ambrose would be a much better WrestleMania main event than anything
involving Triple H as WWE champion.

It's also something that people will "respect" enough to not derail with
YES! or Daniel Bryan! chants.

I'm still not sold on the retirement. It's one thing for the WM main event to end with Reigns winning but the smarks would still have in
the back of their head, the hope that Bryan will one day come back to take the title. Without that, there's no hope as a wrestling fan, barring
getting behind Styles or Cesaro.
I just think the WWE has an ace in the hole as they know enough that WM currently sucks. It would make zero sense to put such a big squash on the WM
buildup. You'd have to save this announcement for April or May.
I think Bryan goes through with this and someone comes out, laughing Bryan out of the building, causing DB to reconsider everything and the storyline
being that DB is fighting with the WWE brass to clear him. You can even have doctors as characters to get put in the Yes Lock.
I just think its suicide to lose so many fans to Bryan retiring because Vince is spiteful. I know he's crazy but he's not this stupid.

Glad they're doing Charlotte vs. Brie at Fast Lane. Pretty much ensures we're getting at the very least Charlotte vs. Sasha vs. Becky [vs.
Paige?] at Mania.

Okay, let's stop this train before it turns into a wreck. I'm a BIG fan of Mr. Bryanson, but we have to stop acting like his fans
are 1) 50% of the crowd or more, and 2) going to actually stop watching when he's gone. Yes, SOME people will stop, and I respect their choice
& willpower to do so. Most of us, however, are just going to keep on watching, and latch on to A.J./K.O./Sami Zayn/Whoever we love next.
Wrestling Fans Anonymous is a 12-step support-group that doesn't exist, but probably should. I know I could probably get some value out of
attending a meeting or two, even if I didn't share my story with the group.

It's not about latching onto the next guy though....it's the process. We were big fans of CM Punk but we didn't get behind him fully
when he left because he was a bit of a douche, and continues to be. Daniel Bryan is the last true babyface and if you don't think more than 50%
of the fans are his, then you don't remember WM30 or the whole YES Movement stuff.
Plus look at Edge....we were saddened by that but that was his choice and it was clearly the smart move. Bryan fully believes he has plenty in the
tank, and he does. WWE got the cold feet and released Angle many years back and he's still wrestling 7-8 years later. He didn't die in the
ring like they "feared." These guys are still athletes, no matter how you slice it.
When so many doctors are saying Bryan is OK and the WWE doc isn't, something is truly amiss. People aren't that beat down by concussions,
I'm sorry, they're not. Something is truly amiss, and this would truly be the biggest angle they'd have done since forever.
They'd have worked even TMZ. And you have a bulldozer of a storyline heading into an otherwise VERY lackluster Wrestlemania.....
We talk about how the WWE needs to do SOMETHING other than Reigns/HHH to sell out 100K seats in Dallas.....isn't this THE answer?

I agree with the sentiment, but I will say I think Bryan was over with more than that. To super rabid levels where they'll quit watching? Naw.
But I think it's going to be a big hole to fill, and he'll be missed by all. Certainly more than 50%.
And I love that Jericho just turned MizTV into the Highlight Reel out of no where.

Missed by MANY? Yes. Missed by LOTS? Yes. His
retirement costing Vince assloads of money? Eh. Vince will get money from the DVDs, and everything else that comes with "A Big Star Retires".
This is, to use once more the obvious comparison, like when Edge retired suddenly. How did that impact the WWE's financial status? We're
still here, and some of us are looking forward to the Edge & Christian show on the network.
In short, YES! \o/ (heh) he will be missed by many. I'm just taking umbrage with the idea that =this= is going to be the straw that breaks
the WWE camel in half. The E have had 'bigger names' walk away, and besides the reactions of a few people who seriously do find other
product to watch, mostly what happens is "I'm never watching again.. until something interesting draws me back to the product." Humans are
creatures of habit.

Except it's not. We came to grips with the fact that this was Edge's decision and doctors across the board agreed with the decision. This
is not across the board with DB's concussions. Most are saying he is good and whenever he is out of his contract, he is going somewhere else.
It's that sliminess that is low even for Vince.
