ONLINE ONSLAUGHT
WWE TV Spoilers
September 22, 2004

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OnlineOnslaught.com

SD! might have just as many problems at the top title/main event level as RAW... but just looking at the rest of the show compared to where it was three months ago? Well, I've been talking about how I think they've taken over the lead from RAW in terms of overall, week-in, week-out entertainment value for a while, so I shan't repeat myself.

All I'll do instead is point out that this week would be a good week for SD! to keep bringing the Quality. Not only is it their fifth anniversary show and "season premiere," meaning that Stunt Casting with Steve Austin and Hulk Hogan might rope in a few eyeballs (eyeballs that might stick around if they like what they see), but it's also just (sigh) 10 days until

the next SD!-only PPV.  Boy, it sure was nice there, in August and September, getting back to just one PPV ever 4-5 weeks, the way god intended it.

But that's not the point.  The point is that whether its dumbass oversaturation or not, SD!'s got a PPV coming, and when you throw in the anniversary aspect, this is a week they need to hit the ball out of the park.  Will they? Well, if you weren't such nosy bastards, you'd wait till tomorrow night and find out like good little wrestling fans.  But if you're here, then it's for a reason.

You know what you're getting into if you read past this point....

WWE Sunday Night Heat
(Taped Monday, Airs Sunday)

  • Chuck Palumbo beat Val Venis
  • Gail Kim beat Nidia
  • Rodney Mack beat Steven Richards

WWE Velocity
(Taped Tuesday, Airs Late on Saturday)

  • Carlito Cool beat Shannon Moore (dark match, but good heat for it, supposedly)
  • Nunzio beat Akio
  • Rico and Charlie Haas beat the Bashams
  • Rene Dupree beat Hardcore Holly (no Billy Gunn, Suzuki interfered for the win)
  • Johnny the Bull beat Some Guy (thought to be a dark match by 2 of 3 reporters)

WWE SmackDown!
(Taped Tuesday, Airs Thursday)

  • Vince McMahon did a taped opening for the Fifth Anniversary Show.
  • Paul London beat Billy Kidman. As done as a test run on house shows, Kidman just walked out before the match even started, giving London the count-out win; I guess they're playing London up as the heelish aggressor, but if Kidman's playing the pussy, I can tell you who the fans are gonna boo. But I actually like that uncertainty and touch of realism...
  • Booker T beat Paul London (I think).  After London was alone in the ring, Booker T came out and it SOUNDS like they actually had an official match won by Booker (one reporter, however, said they just did a little brawl and an angle where London got the better of it).  Kinda confusing from garbled reports, so just watch the show, OK?
  • Mick Foley's Favorite SD! Moments: all sorts of Rock 'n' Sock Connection highlights.
  • Backstage Triple Dip:  First GM Teddy Long confronts Kidman and says he and London will fight at No Mercy, and no cheap count outs or anything...  then they did a bit with Dawn Marie getting changed into a school girl outfit for a match against Torrie Wilson later tonight...  and finally, Rey Mysterio and Spike Dudley are doing a face-to-face interview about their CW Title Match when Kenzo Suzuki interrupts and mocks Rey in broken English, so Rey attacks him and bolts.
  • Spike Dudley beat Rey Mysterio.  Good match, but short-ish; Spike had his brothers helping him, and finally, after a big Rey rally late in the match, the ref caught them, and ejected them.  However, while he was busy with Bubba and D-Von, Suzuki and Rene Dupree ran out and attacked Rey.  Spike was easily able to folllow up and get the win.  After the match, Spike left, but Rene and Suzuki were gonna attack until RVD made the save.  I'm liking the SD! tag scene these days (and with the Duds and Rey, how it also ties into the CW picture)....
  • Stephanie McMahon's Favorite SD! Moment: smooching with Kurt Angle.
  • Backstage Double Dip:  first GM Teddy Long tells Suzuki/Dupree that they will face Rey/RVD at No Mercy...  then they recap Vogon Poet Heidenreich's angle with Cole last week, and do an allegedly funny bit in which Heidenreich storms into Vince McMahon's office and reads him a poem while Vince does the Patented Gulp of My This Is Quite Uncomfortable.
  • Undertaker beat Gangrel and Viscera.  JBL and OJ were both watching from ringside, and they couldn't have liked what they saw: Squash City, baby.  Chokeslam for Big Vis, Tombstone for Gangrel.  See you guys in another 4 years, maybe?
  • Change of Plans: Torrie and Dawn are in the ring in their school girl outfits, but GM Teddy Long interrupts, and says he's got a better idea.  He introduces Moolah and Mae Young, and I think you can see where this is headed....
  • Moolah and Mae Young beat Torrie and Dawn.  All the uncomedy you can handle here!  But it was short, I gather.
  • Steve Austin's Favorite SD! Moment: Christmas in Iraq (and also, singing and playing guitar for Vince).
  • John Cena's Token Appearance: he does a freestyle about SD!'s history.  One reporter made a note to let me know that this was a rare GOOD Cena rap, a throwback to 2003; but I'll believe it when I hear it.
  • Backstage: Kurt Angle is musing with Luther Reigns about tonight's events, and while they've got a big tag match coming up, Kurt is also able to sneak in some funny asides about how he's a freaking SmackDown! legend and nobody asked HIM to sit down for his favorite SD! moments....
  • Hulk Hogan's Favorite SD! Moment: winning the tag titles with Edge shortly after bringing back the Red and Yellow of Hulkamania.
  • Eddie Guerrero and Big Show beat Kurt Angle and Luther Reigns by DQ when Mark Jindrak (?!?) interfered.  A new Team Angle, perhaps?  Somebody hit the FF button on the Angle Talks Some Sense Into Charlie Haas And Gets Him Away from Rico and Jackie Storyline, and he'll have a nice little foursome, there.  Anyway, finish is Jindrak running in to kill a rally by the babyfaces shortly after a hot tag to Show and Chaos Breaking Loose.  In the 3-on-2 post-match brawl: Eddie is taken out after a shot to the ringpost/steps/something, but in the ring, Big Show takes a tazer (or dart gun, or something, not clear from reports), and is completely KO'ed.  And the show ends with Angle, Reigns, and Jindrak completely shaving Big Show's head.  [The TV show ends, there, but live, Show was helped to the back, and then Eddie came to and challenged Angle to a fight; so Kurt came back out, ate the Three Amigos and a Frog Splash, and that was enough to send folks home happy.]

Save for somebody's sick Moolah/Mae fetish, this sounds like another really entertaining show.  Check it out tomorrow night, or come back on Friday for all the recapping and analysis you can handle!
