OO FEATURE COLUMN
Post-War Syndrome
September 8, 2003

Hey yo,

Back when I recapped Nitro for some bush-league websites, I started my recaps like that, and The Rick has me feeling nostalgic after reading the entirety of his Monday Night Wars feature.  What I’ve written below was originally intended to just be an email to Rick, but then once I got going on the subject, I felt like I made a couple of points that I wanted to share with a wider audience.  So, thank you, most gracious webmaster!

Here ya go:

Like Ol' W, I think that Vince McMahon can be criticized for not having an "exit strategy" for after the war.  WCW personalities should have been used right away, which you touched on...but also, in my opinion, the WWF should have lost the InVasion match for total control of the company.  I was saying the same thing back then, and I still firmly believe that more wrasslin' fans (LIKE MYSELF) would've stuck around.

Part of what made the best head-to-head nights was the unpredictability.  Like the night that DX showed-up at Nitro for example...our "Nitro party" didn't watch a single commercial that night because we had to see what was happening on both shows.  Was DX actually going to get themselves in front of a Turner camera?  That same vibe is what characterized the best nights of the InVasion angle.  Notably, the night that ECW joined WCW.  If Vince had had the balls to rename the show "Nitro" and create chaotic scenes with WWF guys attacking Alliance members backstage...guys could join the Alliance as spies...all kinds of CAN'T MISS moments could have come of it.  And hindsight being what it is, Vince could've won-out in the end, renaming his company WWE (or something cooler, I'd've hoped) and taking control again just in time to stop Steph and Shane from renaming "Wrestlemania" to "Starrcade".  I'm tellin' you, I'm just sitting here with a buzz on rambling the first things that come to my head...and every angle that I can think of kicks ass!!!

I never understood why the InVasion angle was dropped, anyway.  I mean, fans are now expected to believe that Raw and Smackdown! are actually in competition with one another for piss sakes!  It's the InVasion angle recycled without "Championship Wrestling" attached to it, and frankly it is uninspired.

Or maybe I'm just a "Championship Wrestling" mark!!

PEACE
